The Satanic Panic was still very alive in the 1990s and in the midst of this, ABC's 2020 aired the alleged real exorcism of a Colombian American teen named Gina. Carmen and Cristina share the context in which her exorcism took place and then discuss the exorcism itself. First, they read a listener story and they end with spooky recs. Carmen recommended the zombie romance called Dating after the End of the World by Jeneva Rose and Cristina recommended Tubi's newest original horror HIVE. They also shared their brief interview with the director of HIVE. Stay espooky!

00:00:04.919 --> 00:00:08.960
Hello, Hello, This is Christina and Carmen and this is

2
00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:11.439
another episode of a Spooky Tales, a podcast for all

3
00:00:11.519 --> 00:00:15.480
things a spooky true crime hunted places, myths and legends

4
00:00:15.480 --> 00:00:21.000
in Latin America. And we have a fun, well sort

5
00:00:21.039 --> 00:00:27.199
of fun topic today. Oh extra seismo eo. But first,

6
00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:30.800
if you are on Patreon, you heard us talk about

7
00:00:30.839 --> 00:00:34.399
our time together. My ass well, neither one of us

8
00:00:34.399 --> 00:00:37.079
thought about recording a new link vlogs like we sometimes do,

9
00:00:37.280 --> 00:00:39.600
so we could have because we were out and about

10
00:00:39.640 --> 00:00:43.880
more so, my bad, my bad. But yeah, if you're

11
00:00:43.920 --> 00:00:46.280
over on Patreon at the lowest here you can hear

12
00:00:46.520 --> 00:00:50.679
our extra yapping about our time together. And before we

13
00:00:50.719 --> 00:00:53.119
get to our topic, we do have a listener's story.

14
00:00:53.560 --> 00:00:55.119
If you have a story that you want to send

15
00:00:55.159 --> 00:00:57.280
to us, you can email us Spooky Tales at gmail

16
00:00:57.320 --> 00:01:00.159
dot com. You can send it via DM on any

17
00:01:00.200 --> 00:01:01.719
of the socials. You can even leave it as a

18
00:01:01.719 --> 00:01:05.400
comment and we'll read it. We love receiving them. All right,

19
00:01:05.439 --> 00:01:10.000
are you ready already? Okay? This listener story is from Cassandra.

20
00:01:10.480 --> 00:01:14.000
Shout out Cassandra. This happened in twenty sixteen. I was

21
00:01:14.040 --> 00:01:17.799
dating my boyfriend, now my husband. I remember that night

22
00:01:17.879 --> 00:01:20.359
he came to see me. At that time, I had

23
00:01:20.400 --> 00:01:22.079
my son who was two years old, so I took

24
00:01:22.120 --> 00:01:25.640
him outside and we were talking in his car. I

25
00:01:25.719 --> 00:01:28.640
noticed the time it was almost three am, so I

26
00:01:28.680 --> 00:01:31.439
was like, I have to go inside. My son at

27
00:01:31.439 --> 00:01:33.400
that time had his little bed next to mine, so

28
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:35.719
I grabbed him, laid him down with me, and started

29
00:01:35.719 --> 00:01:38.799
to fall asleep. So in that room there was two doors,

30
00:01:38.840 --> 00:01:41.239
one for the restroom and one that led to the

31
00:01:41.280 --> 00:01:44.640
living room slash kitchen. I remember laying there looking at

32
00:01:44.640 --> 00:01:47.359
the door that was leading to the kitchen when I

33
00:01:47.400 --> 00:01:51.560
felt something staring at me. I turned to the edge

34
00:01:51.599 --> 00:01:54.000
of the bed like where my feet were, which was

35
00:01:54.040 --> 00:01:56.640
in front of the door that leads into the restroom.

36
00:01:57.519 --> 00:02:00.959
I saw a tall shadow, like a skinny tall man.

37
00:02:01.840 --> 00:02:05.120
He was hunched over looking over me and my son

38
00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:08.280
on the bed. I screamed so loud for my mom

39
00:02:08.400 --> 00:02:12.039
and ran to turn the light on. Well where I

40
00:02:12.039 --> 00:02:14.039
saw the man. I had a picture frame of my

41
00:02:14.120 --> 00:02:16.879
son hanging and it fell when I turned the light

42
00:02:16.919 --> 00:02:20.360
on and it broke. Wow. I remember sleeping with the

43
00:02:20.439 --> 00:02:24.039
lights on the next day. I told my mom if

44
00:02:24.039 --> 00:02:26.439
she heard me scream, and she says she did, but

45
00:02:26.520 --> 00:02:30.000
she didn't think anything of it. Excuse me, Mom, what

46
00:02:30.039 --> 00:02:33.479
do you mean? Mom? Mom? We need to talk.

47
00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:35.120
Well.

48
00:02:35.199 --> 00:02:38.520
Later that weekend, my parents also saw it very clearly.

49
00:02:38.960 --> 00:02:41.199
They saw a shadow of a tall man run into

50
00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:44.360
their closet and they got scared as hell. I don't

51
00:02:44.360 --> 00:02:46.599
think my mom believed me at first, so she saw

52
00:02:46.599 --> 00:02:51.479
the shadow man herself. But weirds of always what happened

53
00:02:51.719 --> 00:02:55.400
at the house. That's the only time I actually saw something.

54
00:02:55.800 --> 00:02:58.680
I forgot to add. My mom said, I probably brought

55
00:02:58.680 --> 00:03:01.639
something inside with me because I came in at the

56
00:03:01.680 --> 00:03:05.680
witching hour and a spirit probably followed me in. Your

57
00:03:05.680 --> 00:03:09.800
mom is right, you know what? Yeah, Like they say

58
00:03:10.039 --> 00:03:14.759
nothing good happened after midnight, but especially three am. No

59
00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:21.319
one says that you just made that up. I think, yes, yeah, no,

60
00:03:21.479 --> 00:03:25.120
that's scary though. No, yeah, it is scary. I certainly

61
00:03:25.159 --> 00:03:30.479
wouldn't want to experience any of that, so certainly not. No, no,

62
00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:42.800
All right, So today we are talking about the extorcism

63
00:03:42.919 --> 00:03:49.639
of Gina. Gina was a first generation American of Colombian descent,

64
00:03:50.400 --> 00:03:53.120
and this happened during the height of the Tantic Panic.

65
00:03:53.879 --> 00:03:59.000
Oh Let's Satanic Panic. One of my favorite topics yeah,

66
00:03:59.280 --> 00:04:01.719
for anyone that does know. The Satanic Panic was a

67
00:04:01.759 --> 00:04:05.879
moral panic that occurred during the eighties and nineties, like

68
00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:09.240
from the eighties to the nineties. Yeah, well into the nineties.

69
00:04:09.319 --> 00:04:13.280
Yeah yeah. And during this time there were several allegations

70
00:04:13.280 --> 00:04:17.399
of Satanic ritual abuse and general feeling that the country

71
00:04:17.480 --> 00:04:20.079
was at war with Satan and his followers for the

72
00:04:20.079 --> 00:04:24.040
soul of the nation. Also, if anyone wants a wreck

73
00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:27.720
about this, there is a podcast by one of my faves,

74
00:04:27.759 --> 00:04:31.519
Sarah Marshall. Yes, what is it called the wo Am

75
00:04:31.560 --> 00:04:33.560
I making that up? It is, right, Yeah, I think so,

76
00:04:33.720 --> 00:04:35.959
And it's all about the Satanic Panic. It's really good,

77
00:04:37.040 --> 00:04:39.519
which I had no idea. It was so huge in Canada.

78
00:04:40.120 --> 00:04:43.399
Oh me either. So many things contributed to the panic

79
00:04:43.399 --> 00:04:48.399
of the Satanic Panic. It was the perfect recipe for disaster,

80
00:04:49.519 --> 00:04:53.720
all those things combining, right. So yeah, Three movies came out,

81
00:04:54.560 --> 00:05:00.439
all in proximity to each other. Rosemary's Baby in nineteen

82
00:05:00.480 --> 00:05:03.560
sixty eight, the Exorcists in nineteen seventy three, and then

83
00:05:03.600 --> 00:05:07.600
The Omen in nineteen seventy six. And I don't know,

84
00:05:07.720 --> 00:05:10.720
I don't remember. It's Rosemary's Baby based on a book.

85
00:05:11.519 --> 00:05:13.800
I know the Exorcist and the omen Are I think

86
00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:17.199
it is okay. So then on top of that, they

87
00:05:17.240 --> 00:05:19.839
were all based on books that came out not long

88
00:05:19.920 --> 00:05:24.000
before the movies. Like the books came out were immediate bestsellers.

89
00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:27.000
The movies were made people that don't read, because we

90
00:05:27.040 --> 00:05:30.040
know this country doesn't fucking read. Yeah, then more people

91
00:05:30.240 --> 00:05:33.759
were introduced to these movies and just like panic spread.

92
00:05:34.519 --> 00:05:36.800
And it was also around this time that the Church

93
00:05:36.839 --> 00:05:42.120
of Satan started. And then before Michelle remembers, which we'll

94
00:05:42.120 --> 00:05:45.399
talk about a little bit, after this, there was another

95
00:05:45.720 --> 00:05:49.360
insane book, the Satan Seller. Oh may God right, the

96
00:05:49.360 --> 00:05:53.439
same cellar you're purporting to be real events? They were it,

97
00:05:53.560 --> 00:05:55.399
they weren't it, but no one knew that at the time.

98
00:05:55.959 --> 00:05:58.319
And they're also like, you hear the events in the

99
00:05:58.319 --> 00:06:01.120
Satan Cellar and they're just like they like, you're looking

100
00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:03.800
at it with our twenty twenty six lens. Yeah, they

101
00:06:03.839 --> 00:06:07.759
sound insane. They sound like yeah, yeah, yeah, and you're

102
00:06:07.759 --> 00:06:10.560
wrong about has some really good episodes on the Satan Cellar.

103
00:06:10.839 --> 00:06:15.720
And Michelle remembers, oh both yeah. Yeah. So Michelle remembers

104
00:06:15.879 --> 00:06:19.399
the book was written by a Canadian psychiatrist with the

105
00:06:19.480 --> 00:06:25.639
name of Lawrence Pastor and his patient, the interned wife,

106
00:06:26.920 --> 00:06:29.920
and I believe he was married and left his wife

107
00:06:29.959 --> 00:06:33.879
for his patient, who he then turned into his wife,

108
00:06:33.879 --> 00:06:37.480
which of course is not ethical, not right at all. No,

109
00:06:37.800 --> 00:06:40.920
if anyone is doing satanic shit, it's these people who

110
00:06:40.959 --> 00:06:46.000
are then like the key reasons that the Satanic Panic

111
00:06:46.040 --> 00:06:48.199
became what it was, like they were the ones doing

112
00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:53.600
these diabolical things. Yeah, it's uh, every accusation is a

113
00:06:53.639 --> 00:06:57.240
confession type of thing. Yeah. Yeah. Oh and actually the

114
00:06:57.319 --> 00:07:03.920
devil you know, has such a good episode on Michelle

115
00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:08.160
Remembers and the wife's toxic Sarah Marshall. Yeah, yeah, that's

116
00:07:08.160 --> 00:07:10.160
when I knew that he was or learned that he

117
00:07:10.360 --> 00:07:16.720
was married. Married. Yeah, and he was not a good

118
00:07:16.800 --> 00:07:22.879
guy obviously. Yeah. Michelle Smith of Michelle Remembers catapulted the

119
00:07:22.920 --> 00:07:27.720
Satanic Panic into the mainstream. The book claims that Lawrence

120
00:07:28.079 --> 00:07:33.120
helped his patient, Michelle, retrieve previously lost memories of satanic

121
00:07:33.360 --> 00:07:36.279
child ritual abuse. But like he was like feeding this

122
00:07:36.319 --> 00:07:38.920
shit to her, Like yeah he was. He was like

123
00:07:38.959 --> 00:07:42.800
making it up in his twisted little psychotic mind. Psychotic

124
00:07:42.839 --> 00:07:45.959
as in like not I don't know right, Like something

125
00:07:46.079 --> 00:07:49.399
is wrong, not right? Yeah, something is truly wrong on

126
00:07:49.439 --> 00:07:51.399
there to have like just thought up like it's like,

127
00:07:51.439 --> 00:07:55.959
maybe he should have written this Michelle, like you need

128
00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:58.600
to twist Michelle and her beliefs into this. You could

129
00:07:58.720 --> 00:08:01.920
just wrote a fiction book. Yeah, And so the book

130
00:08:01.920 --> 00:08:04.839
became a best seller and it helped spread the idea

131
00:08:04.959 --> 00:08:07.800
that satanic ritual abuse. So it was more common than

132
00:08:07.800 --> 00:08:11.959
we ever thought. And mind you, it wasn't to be clear,

133
00:08:12.160 --> 00:08:15.800
like after all of this was over, there was extensive

134
00:08:15.879 --> 00:08:19.959
studies done and there was like, of all the reported cases,

135
00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:23.639
not a single one was true. That doesn't mean people

136
00:08:23.639 --> 00:08:26.240
weren't abuse because you say this and then people are

137
00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:28.879
like when you're blying, people were abused, and it's like, okay,

138
00:08:28.920 --> 00:08:31.399
people were abused, but it was not in the name

139
00:08:31.439 --> 00:08:34.120
of Satan. Yeah. I think a big part of this

140
00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:40.519
is also, like, so child abuse was hidden brush and

141
00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:44.000
under the rug, a taboo topic that people didn't talk about,

142
00:08:44.360 --> 00:08:49.159
and it coincided with this satanic panic that child abuse

143
00:08:49.200 --> 00:08:51.320
was being talked about more. And I think people didn't

144
00:08:51.320 --> 00:08:54.080
want to accept that child abuse happens usually at the

145
00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:59.720
hands of parents and relatives and known people to those children,

146
00:09:00.120 --> 00:09:03.519
usually parents. Let me emphasize that, but no one wants

147
00:09:03.519 --> 00:09:06.320
to accept that parents will do such things, right, and

148
00:09:06.360 --> 00:09:09.279
so it's easier to say, oh, this is Satan, So

149
00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:12.080
this is Satan and his cult followers, right, But no,

150
00:09:12.519 --> 00:09:16.960
it's the parents. Yeah, and that's a big drive. I

151
00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:20.440
think of a lot of reiterations of the Satanic panic

152
00:09:20.480 --> 00:09:25.440
that we see today. Yeah, because we are seeing reiterations,

153
00:09:26.120 --> 00:09:30.039
I mean not to like get too deep into it,

154
00:09:30.080 --> 00:09:33.360
but Q noon and pizza gaate, Like, yes, it's very

155
00:09:33.360 --> 00:09:36.039
clear that people were abused, but it wasn't in the

156
00:09:36.120 --> 00:09:39.600
name of these weird rituals. It's because these are rich

157
00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:43.360
men in power abusing people. But it didn't have any

158
00:09:43.399 --> 00:09:49.519
to deal with pizzas even if you know, no, no, no. Yeah.

159
00:09:49.679 --> 00:09:53.799
So this brings us to the nineteen eighty seven McMartin

160
00:09:53.840 --> 00:09:57.399
preschool abuse trial, which was also something else that was

161
00:09:57.480 --> 00:10:00.840
fueling all of this, right, yeah, Like if you think

162
00:10:00.879 --> 00:10:04.200
about key events, yeah, in the Satanic panic, this is

163
00:10:04.240 --> 00:10:06.600
one of them for sure. And again we highly recommend

164
00:10:06.639 --> 00:10:10.240
the year wrong about episodes of this or try Devil,

165
00:10:10.279 --> 00:10:13.879
you know, yeah, because they talk about them both. But yeah,

166
00:10:13.919 --> 00:10:18.000
this trial included strange child sexual abuse allegations, which fuel

167
00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:21.519
the Satanic panic, and it became common amongst Americans to

168
00:10:21.639 --> 00:10:25.240
talk about Satanic colts and techniques that an everyday person

169
00:10:25.320 --> 00:10:28.120
could use to perhaps and cover their own lost memories

170
00:10:28.159 --> 00:10:32.159
of Satanic ritual abuse. The topic became so popular that

171
00:10:32.200 --> 00:10:36.159
it was constantly talked about on primetime talk shows. In

172
00:10:36.519 --> 00:10:40.000
nineteen eighty eight, Heeraldo Diberta covered the topic on his show.

173
00:10:41.399 --> 00:10:45.919
The episode is called devil Worship, exposing Satan's underground. During

174
00:10:45.919 --> 00:10:50.039
the show, Ozzy Osbourne showed up, and so did Sean

175
00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:54.600
Tellers and Charles Manson. Do you know what Sean Sellers is?

176
00:10:55.159 --> 00:10:59.720
It sounds familiar? Okay, let me just give a brief

177
00:11:00.600 --> 00:11:05.799
But so Seawan Sellers. He was a serial killer and

178
00:11:07.039 --> 00:11:10.360
he and his best friend, Richard Howard had discussed how

179
00:11:10.399 --> 00:11:14.080
it would feel to kill someone. Then, after this conversation,

180
00:11:15.480 --> 00:11:21.600
Sean Sellers confessed to the murder of Robert Paul bauer Bower,

181
00:11:22.679 --> 00:11:26.320
who was a Circle K convenience store clerk who refused

182
00:11:26.360 --> 00:11:32.159
to sell beer to Richard and Richard Shawn's best friend,

183
00:11:33.759 --> 00:11:38.039
and so the friend Howard. Richard Howard said he was

184
00:11:38.080 --> 00:11:40.759
present but did not participate in the murder, while Sean

185
00:11:41.279 --> 00:11:43.480
wanted to see what it felt like to kill someone.

186
00:11:44.039 --> 00:11:47.039
Then he decided to kill his mom right after this

187
00:11:47.840 --> 00:11:50.120
over a five over his girlfriend because the mom didn't

188
00:11:50.200 --> 00:11:53.480
like the girlfriend, and he attempted to do it twice.

189
00:11:53.559 --> 00:11:55.039
The first time he tried to do it was with

190
00:11:55.200 --> 00:12:00.480
rat poison in her coffee. Then on March fifth, nineteen

191
00:12:00.519 --> 00:12:04.039
eighty six, he shot and killed his mom and his stepdad.

192
00:12:04.080 --> 00:12:07.240
Oh my god, and they were asleep, they were sleep

193
00:12:07.240 --> 00:12:11.840
when he did this. And so at his trial, after

194
00:12:12.039 --> 00:12:14.080
you know, being arrested for this, he said he was

195
00:12:14.120 --> 00:12:18.360
a practicing Satanist, which like then made this all go

196
00:12:18.480 --> 00:12:20.600
crazy in the media. Like the media frenzy over this

197
00:12:20.679 --> 00:12:22.960
case was wild because first this is like a horrible

198
00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:26.399
thing for like a because he was a teen, yes,

199
00:12:26.440 --> 00:12:30.559
he was a teen sixteen when he first did it.

200
00:12:32.240 --> 00:12:36.080
I think it was sixteen under eighteen for sure. And

201
00:12:36.360 --> 00:12:39.080
he said that he had read he claimed that he

202
00:12:39.159 --> 00:12:43.159
was possessed by a demon named user Rate oh when

203
00:12:43.200 --> 00:12:46.120
he did this. And he later said that he read

204
00:12:46.120 --> 00:12:49.879
the Satanic Bible by Anton Levey one hundred times. Oh yeah,

205
00:12:49.879 --> 00:12:52.360
between the ages fifteen and sixteen when the crents were committed. Oh,

206
00:12:52.360 --> 00:12:55.320
I just read that right now. So his lawyers also

207
00:12:55.360 --> 00:12:57.879
tried to argue that he was addicted to dungeons and dragons.

208
00:12:58.039 --> 00:13:03.919
Oh okay, yeah, I can't remember that. And he the

209
00:13:04.120 --> 00:13:06.399
jury didn't, like, you know, say, oh no, it's because

210
00:13:06.399 --> 00:13:08.799
he was possessed that he was found guilty of the homicides.

211
00:13:09.159 --> 00:13:11.639
But then he became a Christian while in prison, as

212
00:13:11.679 --> 00:13:15.399
they all do. Yeah, as they all do. And then

213
00:13:15.440 --> 00:13:18.480
he he would do a bunch of like, uh, media

214
00:13:18.519 --> 00:13:24.320
appearances denouncing War One. Yeah. Yeah, and he's also in

215
00:13:24.360 --> 00:13:33.039
documentaries about Satanism. So yeah, and Oprah Winfree need to

216
00:13:33.080 --> 00:13:37.480
be held accountable fout the harm they have called United

217
00:13:37.480 --> 00:13:44.120
States and society. Yes, yeah, Let's see the other guests,

218
00:13:44.360 --> 00:13:47.960
Zina Levey, daughter of Anton Levey, who you just talked about,

219
00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:49.759
and he was the founder of the Church of San

220
00:13:50.240 --> 00:13:53.679
m HM. And so the first part showed murders and

221
00:13:53.759 --> 00:13:56.840
suicides that have been blamed on Satanism, then all the

222
00:13:56.879 --> 00:14:00.720
segments with these guests all talking about Satanism, and then

223
00:14:01.279 --> 00:14:04.039
a segment of kids talking about abuse they went through

224
00:14:04.120 --> 00:14:07.320
under the hands of Satanists, which I don't think there's

225
00:14:07.320 --> 00:14:10.679
ever been a proven case of actual Saintanists doing ritual

226
00:14:10.679 --> 00:14:13.639
abuse on children. That's what I'm saying, Like abuse did happen.

227
00:14:13.919 --> 00:14:16.240
No one is saying that didn't happen, but it didn't

228
00:14:16.279 --> 00:14:22.440
happen in the name of Satanism. Yeah, yeah, Satanism. And

229
00:14:22.480 --> 00:14:26.759
then the parents of the McMartin preschools were preschool were

230
00:14:26.799 --> 00:14:30.200
there as well. Also an FBI agent who was going

231
00:14:30.279 --> 00:14:33.919
through the anatomy of a Satanic ritual crime all made

232
00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:37.519
up mind you. Yeah, And so it was like back

233
00:14:37.519 --> 00:14:41.440
to back to back coverage of this stuff presented by

234
00:14:41.480 --> 00:14:45.519
someone who was a respected journalist was epicize. One was

235
00:14:45.519 --> 00:14:48.600
was yeah because his show is I don't know about

236
00:14:48.799 --> 00:14:53.600
back then, but now it is considered like trash TV. Yeah,

237
00:14:53.639 --> 00:14:57.720
And like every time that the show cut to a

238
00:14:57.720 --> 00:15:00.200
new segment or two ads, he would be like, you

239
00:15:00.200 --> 00:15:03.360
shouldn't be watching this, like it was so sensationalized, Like, oh,

240
00:15:03.559 --> 00:15:06.240
I've warned you so many times, like you shouldn't watch this,

241
00:15:06.360 --> 00:15:08.480
but if you're still watching, you're gonna hear about all

242
00:15:08.480 --> 00:15:12.879
this horrible stuff. Like it was so sensationalized. And then

243
00:15:13.120 --> 00:15:16.879
in nineteen eighty nine, Oprah herself aired an episode focusing

244
00:15:16.919 --> 00:15:20.840
on allegations of Satanic ritual abuse. I didn't watch this one,

245
00:15:20.879 --> 00:15:26.000
So I don't know, but I'm guessing it was very similitizational. Yeah, yeah,

246
00:15:26.039 --> 00:15:35.320
to the other one. On March fourth, nineteen ninety, the

247
00:15:35.440 --> 00:15:39.600
highly respected Cardinal John O'Connor of Saint Patrick's Cathedral helped

248
00:15:39.600 --> 00:15:42.840
propel the narrative forward when he told per parishioners that

249
00:15:42.879 --> 00:15:46.039
the devil was real and his evil was spreading. He

250
00:15:46.120 --> 00:15:49.440
told church gores that people like Charles Manton and an

251
00:15:49.519 --> 00:15:53.519
increase in cults and black masses were proof of it spread.

252
00:15:54.320 --> 00:15:57.440
What did you mean by black mass? Oh? Like yeah,

253
00:15:57.480 --> 00:15:59.360
black masks like the Church of Satan.

254
00:15:59.480 --> 00:15:59.720
Yeah.

255
00:16:00.240 --> 00:16:03.759
Yeah. Then he shocked his personers by announcing that the

256
00:16:03.840 --> 00:16:07.120
church had already approved two exorcisms to red people of

257
00:16:07.159 --> 00:16:10.679
demon possession. Yeah. Because when I first heard about this,

258
00:16:10.799 --> 00:16:12.960
I was like, well, if you're in a Catholic church,

259
00:16:12.960 --> 00:16:15.000
you hear all the time about the devil. But I

260
00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:18.000
think when he added on we've already done to exorcisms,

261
00:16:18.039 --> 00:16:21.720
that was like, what the what what? Yeah, because you

262
00:16:21.759 --> 00:16:28.559
hear about the theoretical metaphorical devil who's tepting you into sin,

263
00:16:29.720 --> 00:16:33.840
but not like demon possession, right, yeah, And then to

264
00:16:33.919 --> 00:16:36.679
hear while in church like yeah, and by the way,

265
00:16:36.879 --> 00:16:40.080
we have done too, for sure, exorcisms like this year

266
00:16:40.600 --> 00:16:44.360
and in this climate, right, yeah, which is already like

267
00:16:44.480 --> 00:16:46.039
all of this stuff is going on, and then they

268
00:16:46.039 --> 00:16:49.759
hear this, you know. And so it was during this

269
00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:55.720
satanic panic and climate of fear of Satan that Gina's

270
00:16:55.759 --> 00:16:59.200
case rose to the national stage. Gina was a sixteen

271
00:16:59.240 --> 00:17:03.519
year old girl from Florida who whose mother and church

272
00:17:03.559 --> 00:17:08.720
leaders claimed that she was possessed by demotic spirits in

273
00:17:08.759 --> 00:17:11.960
April nineteen ninety one. Gina's story played out in several

274
00:17:11.960 --> 00:17:15.960
living rooms across America when ABC's twenty twenty aired a

275
00:17:16.000 --> 00:17:19.240
too part report on her exorcism twenty twenty always on

276
00:17:19.279 --> 00:17:21.839
the wrong side of shit, yeah, most of the time.

277
00:17:21.960 --> 00:17:25.519
Like sometimes they have good reports, yeah, but sometimes like

278
00:17:25.799 --> 00:17:29.519
they're like a kid to Oprah and hit outoiveta with

279
00:17:29.559 --> 00:17:34.359
their sensationalism. Survivors or family members of vicdor Yeah who

280
00:17:34.440 --> 00:17:37.880
come forwarda yeah, like twenty twenty made this up, right

281
00:17:37.880 --> 00:17:41.119
about this misrepresented? This met with them, but yeah, they

282
00:17:41.240 --> 00:17:43.759
like misrepresented like what I say, and blah blah. Yeah,

283
00:17:43.839 --> 00:17:47.359
that happens a lot. And before we get into the

284
00:17:47.400 --> 00:17:50.279
events of the exorcism, it's worth noting that until the

285
00:17:50.359 --> 00:17:54.759
late twentieth century. Under the Catholic Church, extressists were anonymous

286
00:17:54.799 --> 00:17:58.480
and the performance of exorcisms remained a secret, which makes sense, right,

287
00:17:58.559 --> 00:18:03.720
because if these things are real, you don't want sensationalism,

288
00:18:03.799 --> 00:18:08.519
right this keeping it anonymous, keeping it secret prevented sensationalism.

289
00:18:09.000 --> 00:18:11.480
And you don't want to spread panic, right, because that's

290
00:18:11.519 --> 00:18:16.079
exactly what happened when that O'Connor guy said it to

291
00:18:16.160 --> 00:18:19.559
his parishioners. It caused panic, and that's like, you don't

292
00:18:19.599 --> 00:18:22.720
want to like panic people. So like, yes, part of

293
00:18:22.759 --> 00:18:25.200
the Catholic Church are scaring people into obedience, right, but

294
00:18:25.359 --> 00:18:31.240
like mass panic is not it, right, And so exorcisms

295
00:18:31.759 --> 00:18:37.240
are not supposed to be televised, no, but Gina's exorcism

296
00:18:37.799 --> 00:18:42.039
was approved by Joseph Keith Simons, the bishop of the

297
00:18:42.079 --> 00:18:46.599
Diocese of Palm Beach, to be televised. Palm Beach always

298
00:18:46.640 --> 00:18:50.400
on the wrong side of Florida, wrong side of history

299
00:18:50.400 --> 00:18:53.480
of Florida. So yeah, he was the one who approved

300
00:18:53.519 --> 00:18:57.279
and authorized taping in the exorism, and he said he

301
00:18:57.319 --> 00:19:01.039
hoped it would help quote conteract the dia bolical activities

302
00:19:01.079 --> 00:19:06.559
around us end quote. That quote feels us mind you,

303
00:19:09.039 --> 00:19:12.559
if anyone was involved in diabolical activities, it was a

304
00:19:12.599 --> 00:19:16.599
Bishop Joseph Keith Simmons because he was sexually abusing boys

305
00:19:18.319 --> 00:19:21.000
there it is, of course he was, and probably all

306
00:19:21.039 --> 00:19:24.279
this to bring attention away from himself, right, That's why

307
00:19:24.319 --> 00:19:28.839
they do this shit. Bishop Joseph was forced to resign

308
00:19:28.880 --> 00:19:32.000
in nineteen ninety eight after publicly admitting that he had

309
00:19:32.000 --> 00:19:35.920
abused five boys. And it was actually the first US

310
00:19:35.960 --> 00:19:38.680
Catholic bishop to lose his position over the sexual abuse

311
00:19:38.720 --> 00:19:42.799
of minors. Was this around the time? Was this during

312
00:19:42.799 --> 00:19:46.279
the time of like Pope John Paul It was ninety eight,

313
00:19:46.359 --> 00:19:48.640
So yeah, right, I think so. I think so then

314
00:19:48.720 --> 00:19:51.400
because there was like the biggest scandal of the Catholic

315
00:19:51.440 --> 00:19:54.240
Church was during this time when they were like found

316
00:19:54.279 --> 00:19:58.160
to be hiding the abuse, which I'm assuming that this

317
00:19:58.279 --> 00:20:03.079
falls under that. Yeah, I'm sure. His successor as a

318
00:20:03.119 --> 00:20:06.759
Bishop of pomp Beach, Anthony O'Connell, was also forced to

319
00:20:06.759 --> 00:20:09.039
resign in two thousand and two after admitting to sexually

320
00:20:09.039 --> 00:20:14.720
busney boys. This is a real syntantic panic, this this

321
00:20:14.920 --> 00:20:19.119
right here. Yeah, the religious because it's not just the

322
00:20:19.119 --> 00:20:21.519
Catholic Church. People. People then make like the joke that

323
00:20:21.599 --> 00:20:23.920
spread is like the old Catholic priests. But it's like, no,

324
00:20:24.000 --> 00:20:28.000
this happens in every religion, some more than others, but

325
00:20:28.039 --> 00:20:30.960
they don't get as televised, Like there was no mass

326
00:20:31.400 --> 00:20:35.359
reporting of like the rampant abuse in I don't know

327
00:20:35.400 --> 00:20:37.720
a lot of it like ends up coming forward to

328
00:20:37.880 --> 00:20:42.319
for like thousands of because there's a clear hierarchy in leadership.

329
00:20:43.160 --> 00:20:47.079
That's all churches are like that, Like some denominations are independent,

330
00:20:47.119 --> 00:20:49.960
they have no higher ups, and so then who is

331
00:20:49.960 --> 00:20:52.960
overseen anything? You know what I mean? Right, And this

332
00:20:52.960 --> 00:20:56.880
this schedule of the nineties into the two thousands involved

333
00:20:56.920 --> 00:20:59.960
the hiding from the higher ups in the Catholic Church.

334
00:21:00.119 --> 00:21:02.680
So yeah, no, you're right, you're right, but it's important

335
00:21:02.680 --> 00:21:07.000
to note that this abuse happens in all religions. Yeah.

336
00:21:07.119 --> 00:21:09.759
So Anthony O'Connell was forced to resign in two thousand

337
00:21:09.759 --> 00:21:13.200
and two after admitting to sexually abusing boys. Wow, look

338
00:21:13.240 --> 00:21:16.480
at that and the same in the same role, the

339
00:21:16.480 --> 00:21:20.200
same diocese. Like that's wild to me. Yeah, And so

340
00:21:20.319 --> 00:21:23.960
Joseph Keith Simmons only admitted to everything because a survivor

341
00:21:24.000 --> 00:21:27.359
who was Philly three by the time he disclosed, which

342
00:21:27.400 --> 00:21:32.839
is what happens. Yeah, decades later, man, he came forward

343
00:21:32.839 --> 00:21:35.559
to the Archbishop of Miami and disclosed that he had

344
00:21:35.599 --> 00:21:38.400
been abused by Joseph when he was serving as an

345
00:21:38.400 --> 00:21:43.680
aultar boy. Wow. And so yeah, after being questioned, he

346
00:21:43.720 --> 00:21:49.079
admitted to not only abusing that person, but four other

347
00:21:49.240 --> 00:21:52.400
boys as well. And who knows there could be more, right,

348
00:21:52.480 --> 00:21:57.319
there probably is more. Yeah. During the questioning, Joseph Keith

349
00:21:57.359 --> 00:22:01.039
said he had confessed during confession to another priest and

350
00:22:01.240 --> 00:22:07.400
was told to avoid alcohol and remain chased, which means abstinent, right, Yeah, okay,

351
00:22:07.920 --> 00:22:10.079
and yeah, so that's like that's that was part of

352
00:22:10.119 --> 00:22:12.839
the cover up there, that person he confessed to, the

353
00:22:12.880 --> 00:22:14.799
prez he confessed too, started that thing and just told

354
00:22:14.839 --> 00:22:19.759
them to avoid alcohol and remain abstinent. Like this man

355
00:22:19.920 --> 00:22:25.880
just admitted to a crime, multiple crimes. Yeah. So yeah,

356
00:22:25.920 --> 00:22:31.440
this is the actual diabolical man who authorized genus Ecorism

357
00:22:31.480 --> 00:22:38.160
to be taped. Wow. And so the journalists who covered

358
00:22:38.240 --> 00:22:43.759
this or Tom Gerald and Katie Couric, who is renown

359
00:22:43.799 --> 00:22:47.279
in her own right, actually introduced this topic and wow,

360
00:22:47.319 --> 00:22:49.599
as well as Hugh Downs. I don't actually don't know

361
00:22:49.640 --> 00:22:52.279
who he is. You know who Katie Curic is, Yeah,

362
00:22:52.400 --> 00:22:55.160
that's why I recognized. Yeah, and so yeah. The report

363
00:22:55.240 --> 00:22:58.920
started with Katie telling viewers nothing like this has ever

364
00:22:58.960 --> 00:23:01.839
been seen on American Tell truly hadn't because it hadn't

365
00:23:01.839 --> 00:23:06.720
been authorized ever to be recorded, right, right, and Katie's

366
00:23:06.720 --> 00:23:09.920
words were followed by warning from the network that viewers

367
00:23:10.000 --> 00:23:12.640
might hear see content that could be too disturbing for

368
00:23:12.720 --> 00:23:17.599
some part one other report starts off with Gerald explaining

369
00:23:17.640 --> 00:23:21.039
to viewers what an exorcism is and how the Church

370
00:23:21.119 --> 00:23:25.119
came across Gina's story. According to Gerald, Gina had been

371
00:23:25.119 --> 00:23:28.559
plagued by seizures for several years before her mother Felisa,

372
00:23:28.599 --> 00:23:33.599
approached the Catholic Church for help. Gina's seizures were apparently violent.

373
00:23:33.720 --> 00:23:37.160
She was spit vomits, scream and strange voices, and have

374
00:23:37.359 --> 00:23:41.319
visions of demons. According to Felisa. She told ABC that

375
00:23:41.400 --> 00:23:44.839
she initially took her daughter to a psychic healer, who

376
00:23:44.920 --> 00:23:49.000
told her Gina had something bad inside of her, but

377
00:23:49.240 --> 00:23:52.839
Gina only got worse after that. Okay, I was wondering

378
00:23:52.880 --> 00:23:54.680
at which one she took her to the doctor, but

379
00:23:56.039 --> 00:23:59.960
she does, yeah, yeah. Felisa then took Gina to Miami

380
00:24:00.160 --> 00:24:04.079
Children's Hospital Psychiatric Ward, where Gina was admitted for two months.

381
00:24:04.720 --> 00:24:09.880
During her stay, doctor Warren Schlinger diagnosed and treated Gina

382
00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:14.440
for recurring psychotic episodes. The type of treatments received was

383
00:24:14.480 --> 00:24:19.960
never disclosed. Doctor Schlinger told ABC she was actively psychotic,

384
00:24:20.279 --> 00:24:23.960
very agitated, and was having more difficulty functioning even when

385
00:24:23.960 --> 00:24:27.359
it was related to basic self care, but that two

386
00:24:27.359 --> 00:24:31.279
months day didn't really do anything to help Gina. Gina

387
00:24:31.359 --> 00:24:34.119
told the reporter, I was sick with these evil things

388
00:24:34.200 --> 00:24:39.039
every time I was coming out with these voices, with voices. Oh.

389
00:24:39.079 --> 00:24:44.759
So they were desperate for help, and Felicia turned to

390
00:24:45.279 --> 00:24:48.400
the local Catholic church for help. At one point they

391
00:24:48.440 --> 00:24:51.480
had been participating members of the church, but stopped attending.

392
00:24:52.119 --> 00:24:54.920
But either way, the church heard her out and referred

393
00:24:54.920 --> 00:24:57.839
her case to the priest who had performed two extracisms

394
00:24:58.440 --> 00:25:03.400
mentioned by carden Old John O'Connor, who freaked that was parishioners,

395
00:25:03.759 --> 00:25:06.519
was like, you know, we did do exorcisms already. By

396
00:25:06.559 --> 00:25:10.680
the way, the devil is real as fuck, but we

397
00:25:10.720 --> 00:25:13.640
don't have that priest full name. ABC did not disclose

398
00:25:13.680 --> 00:25:17.680
that information. They just identified him as father a right

399
00:25:17.720 --> 00:25:21.839
because exorcists are supposed to be anonymous. Mind you, the

400
00:25:21.880 --> 00:25:26.000
whole exorcism process is also supposed to be a secret. Yeah,

401
00:25:26.119 --> 00:25:29.640
but that didn't matter, just that the father remained anonymous.

402
00:25:31.079 --> 00:25:34.359
Father A and his assistant father James LeVar, took an

403
00:25:34.359 --> 00:25:36.640
interest in the case and with a team of specialists,

404
00:25:37.000 --> 00:25:41.480
they spent six months thoroughly investigating Genus case to determine

405
00:25:41.559 --> 00:25:45.200
if there was any possession, because that's like the one

406
00:25:45.279 --> 00:25:47.519
thing the Catholic Church will do. They won't just do

407
00:25:47.599 --> 00:25:50.920
exorcism out of nowhere. Yeah, And like I remember, there

408
00:25:50.960 --> 00:25:56.119
was a statistic about after the exorcism, the rise of

409
00:25:56.200 --> 00:26:01.519
people seeking exorcisms increasing, but like the Catholic Church wasn't

410
00:26:01.559 --> 00:26:04.039
investigating all of these and so it was actually different

411
00:26:04.359 --> 00:26:08.440
denominations that were doing all these exorcisms that don't have

412
00:26:08.519 --> 00:26:12.599
the same rules as the Catholic Church, which surprisingly we've

413
00:26:12.599 --> 00:26:14.680
talked about it before, yeah, in the one of the

414
00:26:14.759 --> 00:26:19.039
previous episodes, But they have a lot of rules about extraorcisms,

415
00:26:19.079 --> 00:26:20.240
I think a couple of times.

416
00:26:20.680 --> 00:26:21.920
Yeah.

417
00:26:22.160 --> 00:26:26.839
Psychotherapist Carol Rotza was part of the team that initially

418
00:26:26.920 --> 00:26:31.279
validated Gina for the church, and she told ABC that

419
00:26:31.400 --> 00:26:37.039
her interaction with Gina was frightening. Carol said, my first

420
00:26:37.039 --> 00:26:42.279
contact with her sent chills throughout my body. That sounds frightening, Yeah,

421
00:26:42.440 --> 00:26:47.440
very frightening, Carol Rotza, father A, father LeVar, and others

422
00:26:47.440 --> 00:26:51.519
who valiated Gina claim their investigation revealed that during her outbursts,

423
00:26:51.799 --> 00:26:54.960
she could levitate and hone in information. She had no

424
00:26:54.960 --> 00:26:59.839
way of knowing a couple of the signs, right, Uh, yeah, levitation.

425
00:27:00.119 --> 00:27:04.960
There is no other explanation for that. No, either either

426
00:27:05.039 --> 00:27:08.319
everyone else is hallucinating or it happened. I don't know,

427
00:27:09.240 --> 00:27:11.720
because how to I mean, they could be like feeding

428
00:27:11.720 --> 00:27:17.400
off each other, you know. But still, father A told

429
00:27:17.440 --> 00:27:20.640
ABC that Gina even knew about an exorcism he had

430
00:27:20.640 --> 00:27:23.640
performed the week before, and she correctly named those involved.

431
00:27:24.359 --> 00:27:26.920
But how do we know that other she'moso archbishop didn't

432
00:27:26.920 --> 00:27:33.839
tell her. Was she in the church? When Cardinal O'Connor

433
00:27:34.000 --> 00:27:40.480
to corspisioners. Right, the group of investigators concluded that Gina

434
00:27:41.240 --> 00:27:44.640
was indeed possessed and submitted a formal request to be

435
00:27:44.680 --> 00:27:49.240
granted permission by the church to perform an exorcism on Gina,

436
00:27:49.559 --> 00:27:53.279
and there are some specific signs the Catholic Church has

437
00:27:53.359 --> 00:27:56.000
deemed must be present. For a person to be considered

438
00:27:56.079 --> 00:28:01.000
under demonic possessions. Yeah, using lego just unknown to the

439
00:28:01.000 --> 00:28:06.000
person or people around them, having extraordinary strength or resistance

440
00:28:06.039 --> 00:28:09.559
to physical restraint, knowledge of events or people that the

441
00:28:09.640 --> 00:28:14.400
person could not have possibly known in aversion to holy

442
00:28:14.519 --> 00:28:19.079
objects or places such as holy water or churches, self

443
00:28:19.119 --> 00:28:24.680
harming and displaying violent or aggressive behavior, elements or conditions

444
00:28:24.680 --> 00:28:29.440
that cannot be diagnosed or treated medically, Having hallucinations or

445
00:28:29.480 --> 00:28:34.599
hearing voices, an abrupt change in behavior or personality, sudden

446
00:28:34.759 --> 00:28:38.640
spiritual dryness. I don't know what that means, Maybe like

447
00:28:38.839 --> 00:28:41.839
they can't feel God anymore, or something like that, they lose,

448
00:28:41.920 --> 00:28:46.039
like their sense of faith. Maybe I don't know. I'm guessing.

449
00:28:46.279 --> 00:28:49.680
I don't think I've heard that before. Yeah, and the

450
00:28:49.759 --> 00:28:54.079
last one expelling of objects or animals through the mouth. Yuck.

451
00:29:02.400 --> 00:29:08.960
Gina had quite a few of these. Yeah. The request

452
00:29:09.279 --> 00:29:13.680
was approved, and part two of the report starts with

453
00:29:13.720 --> 00:29:16.319
a woman cleaning out a space inside the convent or.

454
00:29:16.400 --> 00:29:20.799
The exorcism will take place without Gena's knowledge. She doesn't

455
00:29:20.799 --> 00:29:23.279
even know what's going on at this point. Man, I

456
00:29:23.279 --> 00:29:25.039
feel like they should get her consent. I feel like

457
00:29:25.039 --> 00:29:28.240
you should get the demons consent. I feel like they

458
00:29:28.240 --> 00:29:30.319
should have the permission of the demon inside of her

459
00:29:30.759 --> 00:29:36.039
to perform the actorcism. Yeah yeah, Father A told Gerald,

460
00:29:36.200 --> 00:29:40.839
the top journalist, secrecy ensures the demons cannot prepare for

461
00:29:40.880 --> 00:29:45.880
this surprise encounter with the exorcist. Okay, yes, yeah, I guess, yeah,

462
00:29:45.960 --> 00:29:50.279
yeah sure. The team brought together to assist father A

463
00:29:50.519 --> 00:29:54.680
with the exorcism included psychotherapist Carol Ratza, a nurse, a doctor,

464
00:29:54.799 --> 00:29:59.519
a Spanish translator, additional priests and people to help restrain Gina,

465
00:30:00.279 --> 00:30:03.160
and The ordeals started off with the masks, followed by

466
00:30:03.279 --> 00:30:06.559
Father A given giving Gina a glass of holy water

467
00:30:06.759 --> 00:30:10.240
to try to draw the demons out to drink. I

468
00:30:10.319 --> 00:30:14.319
believe to drink. Yeah. What is in holy water? Can

469
00:30:14.359 --> 00:30:16.319
you not drink it? I wonder if it's like more

470
00:30:16.400 --> 00:30:19.480
fresh or like what you know from the natural springs

471
00:30:19.519 --> 00:30:23.319
of heaven. Does it come down from the heavens? Someone

472
00:30:23.400 --> 00:30:26.599
tell me what is holy water? Does someone just declare

473
00:30:26.599 --> 00:30:28.920
it holy? Like I think that's what it is?

474
00:30:30.119 --> 00:30:30.519
Yeah?

475
00:30:30.599 --> 00:30:36.400
Yeah. Father A then asked Gina some questions, hoping the

476
00:30:36.440 --> 00:30:39.880
demons inside her would identify themselves to help give him

477
00:30:39.960 --> 00:30:43.079
an idea of what he was up against, but they

478
00:30:43.079 --> 00:30:47.519
didn't respond. Gina just started to vomit. That's all that

479
00:30:47.759 --> 00:30:51.000
was the response. That's like, oh you want to know, yeah,

480
00:30:52.400 --> 00:30:57.359
style like the Exorcist movie. Yeah, just project to vomiting

481
00:30:57.440 --> 00:31:00.720
into the I thought that doesn't happen. I watched the video.

482
00:31:02.559 --> 00:31:07.079
So then the confrontation intensifies and Gina starts to speak

483
00:31:07.119 --> 00:31:11.200
in strange voices. At one point, in the strange voice,

484
00:31:11.279 --> 00:31:14.559
she said, Gina said to me, I have to go,

485
00:31:15.200 --> 00:31:16.799
and I tell you I don't want to go. Do

486
00:31:16.880 --> 00:31:23.440
you understand? Yikes. Yeah. Gina then turned violent while the

487
00:31:23.480 --> 00:31:26.000
group prepares to start the extorcism, and she speaks in

488
00:31:26.039 --> 00:31:29.519
tongues while the group is holding her down. She's yelling,

489
00:31:29.599 --> 00:31:32.519
get out of here. I don't want to leave. I

490
00:31:32.559 --> 00:31:35.680
command the evil to leave. Father A would reply to her,

491
00:31:36.799 --> 00:31:39.400
and she's like me, don't want to leave, me don't

492
00:31:39.400 --> 00:31:42.559
want to leave and yeah, And that goes on for

493
00:31:42.559 --> 00:31:46.400
a couple of minutes, and she's staring father Aid down,

494
00:31:46.400 --> 00:31:50.000
who's holding across her face, very intense. So then Gina

495
00:31:50.240 --> 00:31:53.680
finally says, in a childlike voice, my name is Minda.

496
00:31:54.880 --> 00:32:01.480
My name is Mina. Oh yeah, gross, And so father

497
00:32:01.559 --> 00:32:06.480
A commands Miinga to leave Gina's body and it seems

498
00:32:06.480 --> 00:32:09.839
to work. Gina kind of goes back to normal after this,

499
00:32:11.000 --> 00:32:14.640
So then they start asking Gina about the demons inside

500
00:32:14.680 --> 00:32:19.400
of her, and Gina says two of the ten demons

501
00:32:19.480 --> 00:32:23.400
inside of her are named to Zion and Miinga. Gina

502
00:32:23.440 --> 00:32:27.039
tells father Minga or Minka, I don't know she is

503
00:32:27.079 --> 00:32:33.440
Colombian after all, I guess nine, Na, I don't know

504
00:32:33.440 --> 00:32:38.440
why that was. It shouldn't be as funny as it was. Well,

505
00:32:38.480 --> 00:32:41.799
doesn't manage mean vagina like in some European countries. Oh,

506
00:32:41.839 --> 00:32:46.960
I didn't know that. I'm pretty sure. Hold on, it's

507
00:32:47.000 --> 00:32:53.000
a vulgar slang term referring to female genitals, commonly used

508
00:32:53.559 --> 00:32:57.480
the UK. I guess, oh, okay, that's why I was laughing.

509
00:32:57.519 --> 00:32:59.680
I don't know why you're laughing. I just thought it

510
00:32:59.759 --> 00:33:06.119
sounds funny, But no, it's funnier. Gina tells father A

511
00:33:06.279 --> 00:33:11.720
that Zion is an African demon. This feels racist. And

512
00:33:12.160 --> 00:33:16.880
Mina or Minja, I don't know Minka Minika Oh, I

513
00:33:16.880 --> 00:33:20.559
didn't even say. I was saying, you're like minch Minge.

514
00:33:22.119 --> 00:33:27.759
Minka is a short female deman. Then they start the exorcism.

515
00:33:27.839 --> 00:33:32.319
The group surrounds Gina. Father A starts rescinding prayers from

516
00:33:32.359 --> 00:33:34.920
the book The Right of Exorcism while he holds the

517
00:33:34.960 --> 00:33:39.440
cross to Gina's forehead, and Gina doesn't take this well.

518
00:33:39.839 --> 00:33:43.920
She starts screaming blood curdling screams, and she tries to

519
00:33:43.920 --> 00:33:48.240
push father A off, and the team quickly restrains her.

520
00:33:48.799 --> 00:33:50.839
They tie her arms and her legs to a chair

521
00:33:51.039 --> 00:33:54.440
to stop her from trying to hit them and to

522
00:33:54.480 --> 00:33:57.400
stop her from levitating. But honestly, they should have just

523
00:33:57.640 --> 00:34:00.640
left her untied so we could actually see the levitation.

524
00:34:01.240 --> 00:34:04.200
Well they couldn't do that, I think, yeah, but this

525
00:34:04.240 --> 00:34:08.880
would prove everything right, right right. Gina tries to free

526
00:34:08.880 --> 00:34:12.719
herself from the chair, the group spraying around her. She's

527
00:34:12.760 --> 00:34:16.079
screaming sinners or someone screaming sinners. She oh, she is.

528
00:34:16.840 --> 00:34:21.920
She's screaming for Minka. Inside of Minja is screaming Ninja,

529
00:34:21.960 --> 00:34:26.840
inside of Gina is screaming sinners. The world is getting worse,

530
00:34:26.920 --> 00:34:29.599
more wars are coming. You understand, Jesus is going to

531
00:34:29.639 --> 00:34:32.079
take all of us, going to burn a lot of people.

532
00:34:32.079 --> 00:34:36.280
And you know what, Minja wasn't wrong? Now, Minka was right.

533
00:34:36.960 --> 00:34:44.000
More whares did come? Yeah, unjust violent, colonial, imperilous wars

534
00:34:45.079 --> 00:34:48.480
and then Gina's eyes roll back she starts switching between voices.

535
00:34:49.960 --> 00:34:54.159
The exorcism goes on for several hours damn, until it

536
00:34:54.199 --> 00:34:58.440
finally ends with Father Aid demanding that Miinga, Zion and

537
00:34:58.519 --> 00:35:02.320
all other spirits Exita's body for a final time. And

538
00:35:02.360 --> 00:35:04.880
then Gina seems to come out of a trance. After this,

539
00:35:05.800 --> 00:35:08.920
she kisses the cross and is told she's free to go.

540
00:35:09.440 --> 00:35:12.119
That's the sign that she's good. You know, she can

541
00:35:12.159 --> 00:35:14.880
write like she can she can kiss the cross. Yeah,

542
00:35:15.440 --> 00:35:19.519
like it doesn't burn when she touches that. And so

543
00:35:20.440 --> 00:35:26.599
then they go home. But it wasn't over. Oh no,

544
00:35:26.760 --> 00:35:32.119
it didn't actually work well. Gina's mom called father A

545
00:35:32.360 --> 00:35:34.559
to let him know that some of the voices had

546
00:35:34.639 --> 00:35:37.679
returned to haunt her in her bedroom. So Father A

547
00:35:38.039 --> 00:35:41.159
goes to Gina's house and he performs an actorcism on

548
00:35:41.239 --> 00:35:45.760
the house to help further remove the demons. But that

549
00:35:45.840 --> 00:35:46.719
didn't fix everything.

550
00:35:47.280 --> 00:35:47.679
Oh my.

551
00:35:48.440 --> 00:35:52.280
Gina returned to Miami's Children's Hospital psychiatric ward for a

552
00:35:52.320 --> 00:35:57.400
two weeks day, and doctor Schlinger, who treated her again,

553
00:35:57.599 --> 00:36:00.960
told Gerald, the journalist that she did seem to be

554
00:36:01.079 --> 00:36:03.599
responding to the medication a lot better than the first time.

555
00:36:04.320 --> 00:36:08.880
So maybe the actism did help. Yeah, I read that

556
00:36:08.960 --> 00:36:11.119
she had taken or she was given help at all,

557
00:36:12.320 --> 00:36:15.800
but so I think that's how it's pronounced an antipsychotic. Oh,

558
00:36:15.960 --> 00:36:19.159
so maybe she was hallucinating. Whatever it was, maybe the

559
00:36:19.199 --> 00:36:23.559
combination of the two things. M hm. So two months later,

560
00:36:25.480 --> 00:36:31.960
ABC went to go follow up and they learned that

561
00:36:32.360 --> 00:36:34.800
Gina was back at school and she felt much better.

562
00:36:36.039 --> 00:36:40.039
She was still on medication, like psychotropic medication, but she

563
00:36:40.159 --> 00:36:44.000
thanked God for liberating her from her evil spirits. I

564
00:36:44.079 --> 00:36:46.639
feel like the medications at kind of doing the heavy

565
00:36:46.679 --> 00:36:51.119
lifting here, but possibly possibly that's just me. That's just no.

566
00:36:51.159 --> 00:36:53.440
I don't know. I don't know, and I don't know

567
00:36:53.480 --> 00:36:57.639
what happened to Gina since then. Hopefully she continues to

568
00:36:57.960 --> 00:37:03.800
do well. Is no longer plagued by the demons? Yeah? Hopefully. Yeah.

569
00:37:03.840 --> 00:37:04.519
And uh.

570
00:37:04.800 --> 00:37:09.920
When this episode aired, twenty nine million viewers watched. Damn,

571
00:37:10.079 --> 00:37:13.159
that's a lot. Yeah, and it was criticized for being

572
00:37:13.199 --> 00:37:16.800
uneth the goal makes sense. Yeah, A lot of viewers

573
00:37:17.119 --> 00:37:19.800
thought that Gina had mental health issues going on and

574
00:37:19.840 --> 00:37:22.639
that it shouldn't have been televised, especially be the show

575
00:37:22.679 --> 00:37:26.199
with other age. Yeah I could see that. I agree

576
00:37:26.239 --> 00:37:31.000
with them. Yeah, I do too, I do too. Yeah,

577
00:37:31.039 --> 00:37:34.039
but let's go watch this unethical thing. Let's do it.

578
00:37:35.320 --> 00:37:39.239
Boy, here we go fast and furious Jesus bribe.

579
00:37:43.119 --> 00:37:45.519
During a break while the team prepares to begin the

580
00:37:45.599 --> 00:37:47.880
right of exorcism, Gina becomes file.

581
00:37:49.159 --> 00:37:50.360
And the name of Jesus.

582
00:37:50.760 --> 00:37:54.440
I command the spirit.

583
00:37:54.480 --> 00:37:55.320
I was able to leave.

584
00:37:55.440 --> 00:37:57.159
Now we don't want to leave.

585
00:37:57.880 --> 00:38:00.280
Well, da Jesus.

586
00:38:01.239 --> 00:38:03.679
I was trying to struss her heart. She really wants

587
00:38:03.679 --> 00:38:06.960
how she has to help us and man the spirit,

588
00:38:07.239 --> 00:38:10.840
and all of a sudden, that insidious face changed where

589
00:38:11.000 --> 00:38:14.599
Gina was no longer present. That's when the entity started

590
00:38:14.679 --> 00:38:17.360
manifest herself by speaking and revealing who he was.

591
00:38:19.000 --> 00:38:19.440
Minga.

592
00:38:20.079 --> 00:38:21.239
I command Minga, and the.

593
00:38:21.199 --> 00:38:24.880
Person undergoing this say stop all, I don't enough.

594
00:38:25.280 --> 00:38:28.159
We have to be sure that it's the person speaking.

595
00:38:28.360 --> 00:38:32.679
You want pain, I'll give you pain. If during the

596
00:38:32.760 --> 00:38:36.280
course it's the entity masking himself and trying to make

597
00:38:36.360 --> 00:38:39.320
us believe that I'm fine, leave me alone. This is

598
00:38:39.320 --> 00:38:41.719
where we continue and to we're sure that we have

599
00:38:42.280 --> 00:38:43.000
what we started.

600
00:38:43.400 --> 00:38:44.400
Why aren't you prying here.

601
00:38:45.119 --> 00:38:45.639
No, you're not.

602
00:38:49.360 --> 00:38:53.639
It's it's quite disturbing to see. Yeah, I don't think

603
00:38:53.679 --> 00:38:57.320
this should have been allowed. No, I agree, Like the

604
00:38:57.360 --> 00:39:01.039
Catholic cultural Catholic in me is like, oh, this is scary,

605
00:39:01.079 --> 00:39:03.679
but also the other part of me that is just

606
00:39:03.840 --> 00:39:08.840
concerned about the well being of this underage girl who

607
00:39:09.039 --> 00:39:13.679
with something's clearly wrong. Yeah, right to have ended up

608
00:39:13.840 --> 00:39:16.280
where she is, and then it just it seems a

609
00:39:16.480 --> 00:39:22.360
predatory to be watching it. Exploitative, exploitative. Yeah, and yeah,

610
00:39:22.400 --> 00:39:24.679
when you hear her screams, it's like, oh, I'm a

611
00:39:24.719 --> 00:39:29.880
little scared. Yeah, but I think it's like the it's

612
00:39:29.920 --> 00:39:35.039
like feeding off, she's fitting off what's happening. Yeah, potentially,

613
00:39:35.119 --> 00:39:38.079
you know, yeah, I could see that. I could see

614
00:39:38.079 --> 00:39:42.760
that completely. Have you read A head Full of Ghosts?

615
00:39:43.960 --> 00:39:45.840
It kind of makes me think of this, and I

616
00:39:45.880 --> 00:39:49.920
wonder if this was an inspiration to the author, Paul Tremblay,

617
00:39:51.199 --> 00:39:55.239
because A Headful of Ghosts is a girl who's supposedly

618
00:39:55.280 --> 00:39:58.360
going through a demonic possession and then like a TV

619
00:39:58.480 --> 00:40:01.920
crew comes out to film it. But at the same time,

620
00:40:02.079 --> 00:40:05.920
the girl is like worried about the financials of the family,

621
00:40:05.960 --> 00:40:09.000
because I think that the dad losses job, and I'm

622
00:40:09.039 --> 00:40:11.280
not going to spoil anything, but basically that's the premise

623
00:40:11.320 --> 00:40:13.360
that a TV show comes. So she's under a lot

624
00:40:13.360 --> 00:40:18.320
of stress, but potentially maybe could make money from this, right,

625
00:40:18.440 --> 00:40:22.159
and a TV crew comes and they witness things like

626
00:40:22.199 --> 00:40:28.000
we're seeing in this twenty twenty episode. The voices the

627
00:40:29.119 --> 00:40:30.960
because it's at some point you can kind of hear

628
00:40:30.960 --> 00:40:33.320
that she's saying something that doesn't really sound like English

629
00:40:33.440 --> 00:40:35.760
or Spanish, right, but it's like speaking in tongues. But

630
00:40:35.800 --> 00:40:39.480
it reminds me like people speaking tongues and other charismatic

631
00:40:39.599 --> 00:40:45.639
type of Christianity. And no one says they're possessed right there, exactly.

632
00:40:45.679 --> 00:40:48.280
It's the opposite of demion possession. They're touched by the

633
00:40:48.320 --> 00:40:51.639
spirit and that's why they speak in tongues. But it's

634
00:40:51.800 --> 00:40:59.719
the vibes of everyone dancing, screaming, crying that feeds into this. Yeah,

635
00:40:59.760 --> 00:41:04.440
so you know, wherever she is, hopefully Gina has a

636
00:41:04.480 --> 00:41:10.880
good life. Yeah, and yeah, that was the ecstacism of Gina.

637
00:41:11.639 --> 00:41:22.320
All right, before we go, do you have any spooky recommendations?

638
00:41:22.639 --> 00:41:27.760
Actually I do. What did I read or listen to

639
00:41:27.880 --> 00:41:30.079
that I couldn't stop thinking about? And now we don't

640
00:41:30.079 --> 00:41:35.599
remember it now that we record every other week about this. Yeah,

641
00:41:36.039 --> 00:41:39.800
don't remember. Oh. Dating After the End of the World

642
00:41:39.880 --> 00:41:45.079
by Geneva Rose. Oh, how was it? It was really good.

643
00:41:45.440 --> 00:41:47.920
I couldn't put it down. I read it like in

644
00:41:48.000 --> 00:41:51.079
three or four days because of that. But this is

645
00:41:51.280 --> 00:41:58.280
a zombie apocalyptic story, so let me just read the description.

646
00:41:59.159 --> 00:42:02.800
Casey Pearson grew up with a doomsday prepping father. At eighteen,

647
00:42:02.880 --> 00:42:06.159
tired of living an unconventional life, she left home, vowing

648
00:42:06.239 --> 00:42:09.440
never to return. More than a decade later, a mysterious

649
00:42:09.519 --> 00:42:13.760
viral outbreak changes everything, including the people and infects, turning

650
00:42:13.760 --> 00:42:16.199
them into zombie like creatures. It's the end of the

651
00:42:16.199 --> 00:42:19.280
world and no one saw it coming, well except Casey's father.

652
00:42:20.079 --> 00:42:22.840
With no police left to run and danger looking around

653
00:42:22.840 --> 00:42:26.679
every corner, Casey is forced to return home. Upon arrival,

654
00:42:26.719 --> 00:42:28.880
she's surprised to find that her data has hunkered down

655
00:42:28.920 --> 00:42:32.840
with the group of survivors, including her arch nemesis, Blake Morrison,

656
00:42:33.199 --> 00:42:36.039
the high school bully who made Casey's teenage years a

657
00:42:36.039 --> 00:42:40.400
living hell. While struggling to live on the compound, facing

658
00:42:40.400 --> 00:42:45.000
outside threats and surviving alongside her handsome enemy, Casey will

659
00:42:45.079 --> 00:42:49.840
learn that although the world has changed, hers is just beginning. Okay,

660
00:42:49.960 --> 00:42:53.840
And this is like an enemy to lovers story. Yeah,

661
00:42:54.519 --> 00:42:57.000
it is an enemy to lover story. I didn't when

662
00:42:57.000 --> 00:42:59.360
I first got it. It was because it was on sale.

663
00:42:59.559 --> 00:43:02.559
I don't necessarily look for enemy ce lovers like kind

664
00:43:02.559 --> 00:43:07.840
of tropes, tropes, romantic tropes in general. I know a

665
00:43:07.880 --> 00:43:10.599
lot of people don't like the enemy ci lovers trope,

666
00:43:10.719 --> 00:43:14.000
especially when it's a bully yeah, because they're like, oh,

667
00:43:14.079 --> 00:43:18.039
he's mean. A lot of it was how she perceived things,

668
00:43:18.079 --> 00:43:20.280
but he did kind of bully her when they were younger,

669
00:43:22.519 --> 00:43:26.119
whatever it was. Whatever. They're both adults now. Yeah, yeah,

670
00:43:26.159 --> 00:43:30.400
so there's always the world is over, it doesn't matter anymore.

671
00:43:30.440 --> 00:43:32.079
But she's still really mad about it. It's kind of

672
00:43:32.079 --> 00:43:35.199
funny though throughout. But yeah, like some parts were funny.

673
00:43:37.199 --> 00:43:43.039
I kind of like some twigs, twists, twigs, some twists.

674
00:43:43.079 --> 00:43:44.719
I did it eat a twist today. That's probably why

675
00:43:44.719 --> 00:43:49.400
it's on my mind. Some twists were were I like,

676
00:43:49.440 --> 00:43:51.320
I saw it coming, like I like would read something,

677
00:43:51.360 --> 00:43:52.960
I'm like, oh, I bet you this is gonna happen,

678
00:43:53.039 --> 00:43:55.159
And it did. But I still enjoyed it. It was

679
00:43:55.199 --> 00:43:59.119
a good time. It just I love zombie stuff and

680
00:43:59.159 --> 00:44:00.800
I feel like it's not often where there's like a

681
00:44:00.920 --> 00:44:05.559
romance in there. Yeah, it's like it was different for me,

682
00:44:05.599 --> 00:44:10.480
and I'm like, I want to read more books like that. Yeah, okay, okay,

683
00:44:10.599 --> 00:44:12.960
it's good. I may check it out. I do love

684
00:44:13.000 --> 00:44:17.159
a zombie anything, so I will say so the her

685
00:44:17.199 --> 00:44:21.440
bully was a Navy seal or some shit like that,

686
00:44:22.159 --> 00:44:25.840
I'm not reading this, Okay, that's so it makes sense,

687
00:44:25.880 --> 00:44:28.960
I guess for the story. Okay, you know, but I'm

688
00:44:29.000 --> 00:44:33.280
not here for glazing the military at all, especially not

689
00:44:33.360 --> 00:44:39.280
the special forces, right, the most psychotic right, So there's that.

690
00:44:39.320 --> 00:44:42.440
I couldn't give it five stars because of that. Okay, yeah,

691
00:44:42.599 --> 00:44:44.719
I don't know about that anymore then, but it was

692
00:44:44.760 --> 00:44:58.519
still good. Okay, okay, okay, Well I haven't told you

693
00:44:58.559 --> 00:45:00.599
about Hive. If I watched High if it's free on

694
00:45:00.679 --> 00:45:03.000
to be, and you know what, for being on to be,

695
00:45:03.199 --> 00:45:06.320
for being free, I think it's worth checking out. Also,

696
00:45:06.440 --> 00:45:09.800
if like people are looking for like Latino movies to support,

697
00:45:10.000 --> 00:45:12.760
this is one of them. I made a bit about

698
00:45:12.760 --> 00:45:14.440
her on TikTok and then people are like I hated

699
00:45:14.519 --> 00:45:16.000
this movie, and I was like all right, well I

700
00:45:16.039 --> 00:45:21.119
thought it was fun. But basically, this girl is trying

701
00:45:21.119 --> 00:45:23.280
to say about for college and she takes this babysitting

702
00:45:23.360 --> 00:45:25.920
job and this like supposed to be the supposedly really

703
00:45:26.000 --> 00:45:29.639
nice neighborhood in town where like all the rich people

704
00:45:29.639 --> 00:45:32.800
in Hawaii, and like all the workers are black and Hispanic,

705
00:45:34.039 --> 00:45:38.960
and her brother already works there as a gardener. And

706
00:45:39.000 --> 00:45:42.320
then she goes on her first day, like she just

707
00:45:42.360 --> 00:45:45.039
goes wrong. And you know what, I got to interview

708
00:45:45.039 --> 00:45:47.440
the director and I forgot to like even put it

709
00:45:47.480 --> 00:45:49.480
out like as an episode or anything. So maybe I'll

710
00:45:49.480 --> 00:45:55.000
do that add it on to this maybe fun little bonus. Yeah. Yeah.

711
00:45:55.079 --> 00:45:59.679
And so the main character is Sasha played by Tamilt

712
00:45:59.679 --> 00:46:07.119
her name so Chi, yes, yes, And she gets to

713
00:46:07.159 --> 00:46:10.079
this babysitting job and like she just goes wrong. These

714
00:46:10.159 --> 00:46:12.840
kids are not all right. They're part of a hive,

715
00:46:13.320 --> 00:46:16.599
if you will say, part of a hive, yes, yes,

716
00:46:16.679 --> 00:46:21.360
And they move altogether very very zombie like, whether being

717
00:46:21.440 --> 00:46:29.639
controlled or like moving like you know, but parasitic maybe yes, yes.

718
00:46:30.159 --> 00:46:33.639
And the kids to feed this thing, the hive have

719
00:46:33.800 --> 00:46:37.320
been like taking workers and workers have been going missing.

720
00:46:37.559 --> 00:46:41.239
Oh my god. And so she's taken, and then her

721
00:46:41.280 --> 00:46:43.320
brother has the savor. I feel like this is like

722
00:46:43.400 --> 00:46:49.960
a exploration of the exploitation of the working class by

723
00:46:50.199 --> 00:46:53.599
the higher classes. Yes, because the brother at some point

724
00:46:53.800 --> 00:46:57.360
it tells uh Sasha, like you just need to lay low,

725
00:46:57.519 --> 00:47:00.840
do the work and leave, Like, do the work and leave,

726
00:47:01.079 --> 00:47:04.400
stay invisible, and it just I mean, how many of

727
00:47:04.480 --> 00:47:08.079
us have heard that, you know, stay invisible, don't make

728
00:47:08.079 --> 00:47:11.800
a scene, don't stand up for yourself, don't sign up

729
00:47:11.840 --> 00:47:15.679
for yourself. Yeah, and but then when she's taken by

730
00:47:15.679 --> 00:47:18.960
the thing, he has no choice but to fly back

731
00:47:19.159 --> 00:47:22.360
to no longer just do the work, just high, just

732
00:47:22.440 --> 00:47:26.199
lay low. So then they had to like defeat this thing.

733
00:47:26.840 --> 00:47:30.599
And yeah, I mean there's issues with it. It does

734
00:47:30.639 --> 00:47:32.719
fall under like the trope of like the Black Eyed Eyes,

735
00:47:33.960 --> 00:47:37.639
which I did not like, but I don't know, I

736
00:47:37.679 --> 00:47:41.679
felt it felt like a fun low stake watch, you know,

737
00:47:42.400 --> 00:47:45.559
but still heading on some heavy topics like I don't

738
00:47:45.599 --> 00:47:48.840
I don't think. I don't think it was bad, Like

739
00:47:49.199 --> 00:47:53.039
I was like not shocked, but like some comments that

740
00:47:53.079 --> 00:47:54.920
I was getting, like oh I hated the ending. I

741
00:47:54.960 --> 00:47:58.840
was like, Okay, it's a little cheesy, but I don't

742
00:47:58.880 --> 00:48:00.800
it didn't bother me. I had a time and especially

743
00:48:00.800 --> 00:48:06.599
if you again, if you're like seeking independent, creative, different

744
00:48:06.639 --> 00:48:11.599
stories to check out, this is definitely worth checking out.

745
00:48:11.800 --> 00:48:17.840
Maybe i'll insert the interview right here. Very nice to

746
00:48:17.880 --> 00:48:23.280
meet you. I watched the movie yesterday and it was

747
00:48:23.320 --> 00:48:25.960
it was so fun. It also reminded me of a

748
00:48:26.000 --> 00:48:28.199
little bit of Rosadio, like I feel like there were

749
00:48:28.199 --> 00:48:30.440
similar themes. It's like family.

750
00:48:31.360 --> 00:48:32.559
Thank you. I'm happy to be here.

751
00:48:32.599 --> 00:48:34.280
First of all, thank you for taking the time to

752
00:48:34.400 --> 00:48:38.360
check out both of my movies, Rosario and this new one,

753
00:48:38.440 --> 00:48:39.920
Hive that's coming out next week.

754
00:48:39.920 --> 00:48:41.039
I'm really excited about it.

755
00:48:41.719 --> 00:48:44.079
I did have a question because I remember Hive was

756
00:48:44.079 --> 00:48:47.000
a short first. How was it going from a short

757
00:48:47.079 --> 00:48:48.480
to a full length movie?

758
00:48:49.159 --> 00:48:50.119
Yeah, you know, it's interesting.

759
00:48:50.119 --> 00:48:53.599
This one goes all the way back to when there

760
00:48:53.599 --> 00:48:55.760
were the writers and actress strikes in La I was

761
00:48:55.800 --> 00:48:57.840
about to do. I was actually about to shoot Rosario

762
00:48:58.039 --> 00:49:01.199
and we had to stop completely because of these strikes.

763
00:49:01.840 --> 00:49:04.360
So I was like, you know, back home after prepping

764
00:49:04.360 --> 00:49:06.440
this movie, like what am I going to do? And

765
00:49:07.599 --> 00:49:11.039
you know, my friends and crew and actors were all

766
00:49:11.119 --> 00:49:13.199
sort of asking themselves the same thing, and I said

767
00:49:13.239 --> 00:49:16.280
let's go make a short next week. So it came

768
00:49:16.320 --> 00:49:19.760
together really really quickly, and we shot it in a

769
00:49:19.760 --> 00:49:24.000
playground near my house here in LA And yeah, it

770
00:49:24.039 --> 00:49:27.440
was a really fun, like just a poppy, colorful horror short,

771
00:49:27.519 --> 00:49:29.360
basically like a little scene.

772
00:49:29.440 --> 00:49:32.280
And I didn't really have the plans for the future yet.

773
00:49:32.360 --> 00:49:35.000
It was a short to make a short, and then

774
00:49:35.039 --> 00:49:36.719
you know, a couple of folks said, you know, you

775
00:49:36.719 --> 00:49:39.719
should make this into something bigger. There's something here. So

776
00:49:39.880 --> 00:49:42.199
we built it out. We built up the world. We

777
00:49:42.239 --> 00:49:44.079
brought in the same actors who was in the short,

778
00:49:44.119 --> 00:49:47.400
so Chigo Menus, who was fantastic, and two we came

779
00:49:47.440 --> 00:49:49.519
in and really supported it. And when it came to

780
00:49:49.800 --> 00:49:51.639
making the feature, I was like, what is that thing

781
00:49:51.679 --> 00:49:53.960
that's going to give you more weight? And we found

782
00:49:54.039 --> 00:49:57.800
this thematic idea that this creature in this playground, in

783
00:49:57.840 --> 00:50:02.880
this gated suburb also target It specifically targets nannies and

784
00:50:02.960 --> 00:50:05.599
gardeners and babysitters and working class folks, and I think

785
00:50:05.599 --> 00:50:09.599
that just elevated the feature to something that felt real

786
00:50:09.760 --> 00:50:11.400
and relationship driven too.

787
00:50:12.800 --> 00:50:16.280
M Yeah, it was. It was so fun and so different,

788
00:50:16.400 --> 00:50:20.199
I think, and there was like elements of like body horror,

789
00:50:20.199 --> 00:50:24.519
but like also suburban horror. I was not expecting that

790
00:50:24.559 --> 00:50:27.159
body horror, but I should have because Little had it too.

791
00:50:27.880 --> 00:50:29.000
I love bodyhoor.

792
00:50:29.360 --> 00:50:32.280
I love that gore and that kind of instant reaction

793
00:50:32.360 --> 00:50:33.920
of an audience so that they see something a little

794
00:50:33.920 --> 00:50:37.639
gnarly and everybody jumps. That's like a high to me.

795
00:50:37.719 --> 00:50:39.679
It's so fun with that, and Body Horror does that

796
00:50:39.719 --> 00:50:40.199
really well.

797
00:50:40.960 --> 00:50:43.599
Yes, that was my reaction when I saw the first

798
00:50:43.679 --> 00:50:49.000
like instant in this movie. I was like Ugh. For me,

799
00:50:49.599 --> 00:50:52.519
horror is like one of the best genres to explore

800
00:50:52.599 --> 00:50:55.360
deeper themes, and I feel like there was a message

801
00:50:55.440 --> 00:50:59.440
in this movie about the American dream for immigrants, children

802
00:50:59.440 --> 00:51:04.639
of immigrants, and conforming lay Low, especially when we hear

803
00:51:04.960 --> 00:51:09.360
the brother straight up Tellsagia like lay Low, survive like work,

804
00:51:09.480 --> 00:51:11.159
and with that the intention with the Hive.

805
00:51:11.760 --> 00:51:15.159
Yeah, absolutely, I mean I think the first thing I

806
00:51:15.199 --> 00:51:17.599
wanted to do is just make a really poppy, colorful

807
00:51:17.639 --> 00:51:20.519
horror movie set in the day, real time that subverts

808
00:51:20.880 --> 00:51:24.440
the typical horror aesthetic, but within that tell a story

809
00:51:24.599 --> 00:51:29.480
of two siblings, working class siblings. She's it's a first

810
00:51:29.480 --> 00:51:31.760
time babysitter and she's there to save up for college.

811
00:51:32.159 --> 00:51:35.199
The brother is, you know, has his head down and

812
00:51:35.320 --> 00:51:37.239
is working, kind of like the folks I grew up

813
00:51:37.280 --> 00:51:39.079
around with and then the family I grew up in.

814
00:51:39.199 --> 00:51:42.840
That was all about that sort of mindset of you know,

815
00:51:43.519 --> 00:51:47.000
work hard and achieve your goals that way, but also

816
00:51:47.079 --> 00:51:50.000
kind of keep your head down a little bit and

817
00:51:50.320 --> 00:51:54.760
you know, sometimes be invisible to just achieve those goals.

818
00:51:55.239 --> 00:51:57.840
And I think that's a mindset that a lot of

819
00:51:57.920 --> 00:52:00.440
immigrants have, a lot of working class folks have, and

820
00:52:00.480 --> 00:52:02.800
I think it's something that I wanted to explore. This

821
00:52:02.840 --> 00:52:05.599
creature that kind of feeds on that and targets and

822
00:52:05.639 --> 00:52:06.320
exploits that.

823
00:52:06.920 --> 00:52:09.559
Yeah, No, that was That was amazing And I feel

824
00:52:09.559 --> 00:52:12.760
like such a timely time for a movie like.

825
00:52:12.719 --> 00:52:16.280
This, I think, Yeah, I think so absolutely.

826
00:52:18.320 --> 00:52:22.320
Another thing I noticed is sugar and how it played

827
00:52:22.320 --> 00:52:25.639
a role here. When he gives her the candy, he

828
00:52:25.679 --> 00:52:28.119
tells her like to remember where you're from, and it

829
00:52:28.199 --> 00:52:31.320
kind of reminded me of Sousto and like when you're

830
00:52:31.559 --> 00:52:32.920
I don't know if it's like a thing in all

831
00:52:32.960 --> 00:52:36.280
that in American countries, but in Mexico, like if something

832
00:52:36.400 --> 00:52:38.920
so shocking happened to you they would be like, oh,

833
00:52:39.000 --> 00:52:42.119
here's some tanasuka for this, Like so you feel better

834
00:52:43.199 --> 00:52:46.840
with that? Like the thought behind this, that's really I

835
00:52:46.880 --> 00:52:47.199
love that.

836
00:52:47.280 --> 00:52:50.280
I actually hadn't made that connection, but I think that

837
00:52:50.320 --> 00:52:53.159
ties into it. And for me, it was like, Okay,

838
00:52:53.239 --> 00:52:55.880
what is going to defeat this this creature that is

839
00:52:55.960 --> 00:52:59.880
essentially a high mind made of children? What can sort

840
00:52:59.920 --> 00:53:02.760
of overdrive these children? I was like, oh, of course,

841
00:53:02.800 --> 00:53:05.079
like a sugar rush, But beyond that, it was like,

842
00:53:05.320 --> 00:53:08.159
let's tether it to something that this brother and the

843
00:53:08.239 --> 00:53:12.039
sister have from their community, from the working class neighborhood.

844
00:53:12.199 --> 00:53:14.360
And it was these little like go meetas this little

845
00:53:14.400 --> 00:53:18.960
dude says, these little candies of sugar that their auntie

846
00:53:18.960 --> 00:53:21.599
would make and their father would make. Like that gave

847
00:53:21.639 --> 00:53:24.039
it kind of like a weight and a cultural element.

848
00:53:24.079 --> 00:53:25.960
I guess I'm spoiling the movie because now people know

849
00:53:26.000 --> 00:53:28.440
how to defeat our monster, but I think it was

850
00:53:28.639 --> 00:53:32.840
like something that felt both fitting for the creature and

851
00:53:32.880 --> 00:53:33.360
also the.

852
00:53:33.239 --> 00:53:34.159
Themes of the character.

853
00:53:35.599 --> 00:53:38.480
Yeah, originally, originally it was actually like a hot sauce

854
00:53:38.760 --> 00:53:42.159
was the thing they brought it, Like hot sauce that

855
00:53:42.239 --> 00:53:45.559
they're dmade, and that's how they beat the creature, but

856
00:53:45.679 --> 00:53:48.000
I think Sugar is more connected to the kids in

857
00:53:48.039 --> 00:53:48.440
the world.

858
00:53:49.440 --> 00:53:52.000
Yes, I love that, and it also I don't know

859
00:53:52.119 --> 00:53:54.679
Sugar's so demonized. But then for like so many of

860
00:53:54.760 --> 00:53:57.880
us growing up, it was again something that like made

861
00:53:57.920 --> 00:54:01.199
you feel normal again after I don't know, something scary.

862
00:54:01.880 --> 00:54:02.840
Yes, yeah, I.

863
00:54:02.800 --> 00:54:05.199
Think so, and it's like very it's there's a culture

864
00:54:05.239 --> 00:54:06.079
element to it as well.

865
00:54:06.760 --> 00:54:12.639
Yes. My other question is do you have a personal

866
00:54:12.639 --> 00:54:13.960
ghost story?

867
00:54:14.960 --> 00:54:18.519
You know, even on this movie, it's it was interesting

868
00:54:18.559 --> 00:54:21.360
at the end. We were filming in an abandoned water

869
00:54:21.440 --> 00:54:25.119
park that was like really deep in the woods, and

870
00:54:25.360 --> 00:54:26.800
you know, you're filming overnight.

871
00:54:26.480 --> 00:54:28.760
At like six pm to six am, and the place.

872
00:54:28.599 --> 00:54:32.320
Was full of these like rusty, creepy kid water park pieces,

873
00:54:32.840 --> 00:54:35.440
and we brought in like hundreds of dolls for the scene.

874
00:54:35.480 --> 00:54:36.800
If you remember, it's like one of the under the

875
00:54:37.199 --> 00:54:39.199
scenes and we're.

876
00:54:39.039 --> 00:54:42.639
Driving home, exhausted, and we just felt like really like

877
00:54:42.639 --> 00:54:44.519
a presence in a vehicle that had followed us out

878
00:54:44.559 --> 00:54:47.679
of this park, and my cinematographer was crying and I

879
00:54:47.719 --> 00:54:50.199
felt it too, and the driver pulled over and it

880
00:54:50.239 --> 00:54:53.519
felt weird, you know. And in the next day we

881
00:54:53.559 --> 00:54:56.440
asked the producers like what is with that park, Like

882
00:54:56.480 --> 00:55:00.559
it's just a weird it's a heavy place, and it

883
00:55:00.599 --> 00:55:02.719
was they didn't want say anything at first, but it

884
00:55:02.760 --> 00:55:05.360
was built. This water park was built on an indigenous

885
00:55:05.360 --> 00:55:06.400
bureau ground.

886
00:55:06.280 --> 00:55:08.199
Like literally, Poulter guys.

887
00:55:08.960 --> 00:55:12.400
Yeah, And we suspected that it had lashed onto the

888
00:55:12.480 --> 00:55:14.639
dolls that we brought into the set because one of

889
00:55:14.679 --> 00:55:17.039
the dolls was very human in porcelain and it had

890
00:55:17.119 --> 00:55:20.039
real hair, like human hair. It was a very creaky doll.

891
00:55:21.440 --> 00:55:24.440
So we ended up burying that doll in the forest

892
00:55:24.719 --> 00:55:29.119
that kind of give this entity like that kind of acknowledgement.

893
00:55:29.800 --> 00:55:31.679
And I believe in that stuff one hundred percent. And

894
00:55:31.719 --> 00:55:33.880
I think you feel it. And especially when you're making

895
00:55:34.079 --> 00:55:36.559
films that touch on darker themes and you're in places

896
00:55:36.599 --> 00:55:38.840
that sometimes maybe you shouldn't be.

897
00:55:38.920 --> 00:55:42.000
I think that's it's a very powerful experience.

898
00:55:43.400 --> 00:55:47.599
Yes, yeah, And I think you could tell the growing

899
00:55:47.679 --> 00:55:50.239
up like Latino, and I think these stories just have

900
00:55:50.440 --> 00:55:52.719
like a place in all of our lives, like you

901
00:55:52.760 --> 00:55:54.559
just grow up with them with like La Yourna and

902
00:55:54.599 --> 00:55:59.039
all these things, and it comes across and not just

903
00:55:59.079 --> 00:56:02.639
this movie, but like Studio where like you believe it

904
00:56:02.679 --> 00:56:05.800
comes across like I don't know, believable, I guess yeah.

905
00:56:05.800 --> 00:56:08.480
And I grew up in those like folk tales and legends,

906
00:56:08.679 --> 00:56:11.679
the campfire stories of the monster in the woods and

907
00:56:11.760 --> 00:56:15.199
the Guardians and the stars and all that I think

908
00:56:15.320 --> 00:56:17.960
is the ghosts to a lot of like ghost stories.

909
00:56:19.400 --> 00:56:21.000
And I have some aunts who.

910
00:56:20.880 --> 00:56:24.440
Were into like let's say, Bluhidia and communicating with the beyond.

911
00:56:24.880 --> 00:56:26.679
So I've learned a lot of that and grew up

912
00:56:26.719 --> 00:56:29.719
with that, and I think that inspires all my movies

913
00:56:29.719 --> 00:56:30.119
in a way.

914
00:56:31.079 --> 00:56:35.119
M Yes, and then I did see you were from Columbia, right.

915
00:56:35.800 --> 00:56:38.159
Yes, I was born invo with that, and I grew

916
00:56:38.199 --> 00:56:40.039
up in Florida and South Florida.

917
00:56:40.920 --> 00:56:43.239
And there's so many like unique. I feel like there's

918
00:56:43.280 --> 00:56:46.400
there's certain stories that tie all of Latin American together,

919
00:56:46.480 --> 00:56:50.719
like like your own Ice everywhere she travels, but like

920
00:56:50.840 --> 00:56:54.239
a story like La Parta Sola is like only I

921
00:56:54.280 --> 00:56:55.159
feel like Columbia.

922
00:56:56.480 --> 00:56:57.440
So glad you brought that up.

923
00:56:57.480 --> 00:56:59.840
I'm actually my next movie, which I've already shot, is

924
00:57:00.119 --> 00:57:01.440
very inspired.

925
00:57:01.000 --> 00:57:05.880
By Patasla and Wow, Maderemonte is another Colombian story.

926
00:57:05.880 --> 00:57:08.119
It blends both of those, and that was a huge

927
00:57:08.159 --> 00:57:11.719
inspiration for this movie. For this next movie that I'm doing,

928
00:57:11.800 --> 00:57:14.079
it's called The Mouth of the Furnace, So just keep

929
00:57:14.079 --> 00:57:15.079
an eye out for that one too.

930
00:57:15.199 --> 00:57:17.400
Oh that sounds so cool. That was gonna be my

931
00:57:17.440 --> 00:57:19.239
next question if there was gonna be like a future

932
00:57:19.320 --> 00:57:23.360
project tying in like very specific Colombian legends and so wow,

933
00:57:23.480 --> 00:57:25.440
that's yes, fighting And we.

934
00:57:25.360 --> 00:57:27.079
Shot this movie deep in the jungle.

935
00:57:27.119 --> 00:57:29.199
It's full of that kind of indigenous flore It's more

936
00:57:29.199 --> 00:57:32.519
of a fairy tale like Pans Labyrinth, Devil's Backbone and

937
00:57:32.840 --> 00:57:37.559
that movie. It has a very different feel than this one.

938
00:57:37.719 --> 00:57:40.519
So if people liked Rosario and Hive, I just keep

939
00:57:40.519 --> 00:57:41.960
an eye out for this next one.

940
00:57:42.239 --> 00:57:42.559
Oh.

941
00:57:42.679 --> 00:57:46.519
I will be seated. I will for sure. And any

942
00:57:46.760 --> 00:57:49.480
last message for anyone that's like maybe on the fence

943
00:57:49.639 --> 00:57:53.360
of like watching Hive first, like everyone should just watch

944
00:57:53.400 --> 00:57:55.639
it anyway, But any message for like those people like

945
00:57:55.679 --> 00:57:56.639
why should they watch it?

946
00:57:57.119 --> 00:57:58.719
Yeah, I guess something we need to touch on, Like

947
00:57:58.960 --> 00:58:01.719
the the act that we brought on this movie is fantastic.

948
00:58:01.800 --> 00:58:03.400
Sochi Gomez is amazing.

949
00:58:03.480 --> 00:58:06.159
She was America Chavez and doctor Strange and she won

950
00:58:06.239 --> 00:58:08.760
Dancing with the Stars, which feels like a very different

951
00:58:08.760 --> 00:58:11.719
world than this. But this movie is like a choreography

952
00:58:11.800 --> 00:58:13.800
to it, to the way the camera moves, to the

953
00:58:13.840 --> 00:58:17.400
way the monsters move, and she's the best. So you're

954
00:58:17.400 --> 00:58:20.480
a fan of Soaching or fan of Aaron Domingus, who's

955
00:58:20.480 --> 00:58:23.719
our lead actor, I think this movie is worth checking out,

956
00:58:23.719 --> 00:58:27.480
and also for something that subverts your typical horror sthetic,

957
00:58:27.760 --> 00:58:29.440
like if you feel like you've seen it all, I

958
00:58:29.440 --> 00:58:34.000
think this one brings something new in weaponizing color and

959
00:58:34.039 --> 00:58:35.440
brightness and daytime.

960
00:58:36.480 --> 00:58:39.000
Yes, like a playground is such a happy place. The

961
00:58:39.039 --> 00:58:43.320
playground itself is so colorful, yellow, green, the blue, I

962
00:58:43.320 --> 00:58:48.159
think the slide was blue. And then like the creepiness

963
00:58:48.159 --> 00:58:51.079
that is happening in the playground, just like why are

964
00:58:51.079 --> 00:58:51.840
these things together?

965
00:58:52.440 --> 00:58:55.159
Yeah, we want people who watch this movie to like

966
00:58:55.280 --> 00:58:58.800
see playgrounds differently from now on, kind of what Jaws

967
00:58:58.800 --> 00:59:01.800
did with the sharks and the ocean. It's like a

968
00:59:01.840 --> 00:59:03.679
playground is a happy place until it's not.

969
00:59:04.679 --> 00:59:07.039
Yes, yes, now I don't want to take my kids

970
00:59:07.079 --> 00:59:10.079
to the playground. No, but it was so fun. It

971
00:59:10.119 --> 00:59:10.719
was so fun.

972
00:59:11.719 --> 00:59:12.880
Great, Well, thank.

973
00:59:12.760 --> 00:59:15.880
You for watching the movie, and yeah, really appreciating time.

974
00:59:16.639 --> 00:59:22.599
Thank you, thank you. But yeah, I mean it's free

975
00:59:22.599 --> 00:59:25.360
on two B So yeah, those were our speaker recommendations.

976
00:59:25.639 --> 00:59:28.639
A reminder again, if you like skip, well, I don't know,

977
00:59:28.679 --> 00:59:30.280

978
00:59:30.320 --> 00:59:32.519
not gonna hear this anyway, but maybe we should say

979
00:59:32.519 --> 00:59:34.639
it in the beginning. Yeah, we are running every other

980
00:59:34.719 --> 00:59:38.599
week schedule because I have gone back to school. I'm

981
00:59:38.599 --> 00:59:43.000
on my third class now, so I'm doing it. I'm

982
00:59:43.000 --> 00:59:46.519
doing it, and yeah, that's why we're every other week.

983
00:59:46.599 --> 00:59:50.239
And so yeah, we'll see you next next week, next
