In March 1920, seven people in the Bay Area town of El Cerrito were arrested on charges of insanity after conducting Ouija board sessions and engaging in bizarre rituals to ward off evil spirits. In this episode, Cristina tells Carmen about this paranormal case.

00:00:05.639 --> 00:00:09.560
Hi, this is Christina and a Carmen and this is

2
00:00:09.599 --> 00:00:13.119
another episode of Spooky Teals, the podcast for all things

3
00:00:13.160 --> 00:00:16.679
a Spooky Hunted places true crime in Latin America. And

4
00:00:16.760 --> 00:00:20.280
today we just have a Paramol story. So yeah, like

5
00:00:20.359 --> 00:00:24.719
I was saying in the episode portion that you will

6
00:00:24.719 --> 00:00:27.440
only hear of your patreon, I only ended up doing

7
00:00:27.480 --> 00:00:30.960
a paranormal case for this, so yes, but before that,

8
00:00:31.120 --> 00:00:33.560
a listener story. And if you have a story that

9
00:00:33.560 --> 00:00:35.079
you want to send to us, you can email a

10
00:00:35.079 --> 00:00:37.679
spookyite do at gmail dot com. You can just DM

11
00:00:37.799 --> 00:00:40.079
us on any of our socials just at Spooky Tells.

12
00:00:40.320 --> 00:00:43.320
You can call the Spookie Hotline. You can also leave

13
00:00:43.359 --> 00:00:45.280
a voicemail on our website. There's a lot of ways

14
00:00:45.280 --> 00:00:47.280
to get to us and been on discord. We love

15
00:00:47.320 --> 00:00:51.119
receiving them, so yes, send us your stories please. Okay,

16
00:00:51.159 --> 00:00:55.079
and here's our listeners story. I'm from Nicaragua. I've heard

17
00:00:55.119 --> 00:00:57.240
one time from an old lady that used to sell

18
00:00:57.280 --> 00:01:00.159
in the food market in Leon that she remember is

19
00:01:00.159 --> 00:01:02.560
that when she was a child, her mother, that was

20
00:01:02.600 --> 00:01:05.120
also a street vendor, would bring her along and one

21
00:01:05.159 --> 00:01:09.040
time they got their way earlier than they used to,

22
00:01:09.519 --> 00:01:12.560
around three am and they heard a very particular noise

23
00:01:12.760 --> 00:01:14.959
and her mother recognized it as a noise from the

24
00:01:15.040 --> 00:01:18.200
ka nawa and took her under the table and covered

25
00:01:18.200 --> 00:01:24.480
her eyes so she wouldn't see it. That's scary. No, yeah,

26
00:01:24.719 --> 00:01:30.040
that is scary. Never be that early. That's the lesson here.

27
00:01:30.280 --> 00:01:35.079
The early worm does not get the worm the exactly. Yeah.

28
00:01:35.239 --> 00:01:39.920
So from now on, they got there at five or

29
00:01:39.959 --> 00:01:42.920
I would have. I'm okay, and then we'll take a

30
00:01:42.959 --> 00:01:51.319
little break here and then do the paranormal case. Okay,

31
00:01:51.560 --> 00:01:57.000
and we're back. Here's my paranormal case, the Luigi Mania

32
00:01:57.159 --> 00:02:02.519
of El Serrito Wuichi May yeah, yeah, and Buigi Media.

33
00:02:02.959 --> 00:02:07.439
So disclaimer. When I first heard about this case and

34
00:02:07.480 --> 00:02:11.520
I saw the names, I thought it involved Mexicans because

35
00:02:11.560 --> 00:02:16.439
I'm so Mexican centric, you know. Then I realized way

36
00:02:16.599 --> 00:02:23.800
too late that it was actually Italians, not our white cousins.

37
00:02:24.680 --> 00:02:30.000
I was bamboozled by their name. Now it's too late

38
00:02:30.080 --> 00:02:32.759
to change. Okay. So you have a story about some

39
00:02:32.800 --> 00:02:39.599
spicy whites, the Italians. Yes, yes, they are, honestly, I

40
00:02:39.599 --> 00:02:46.680
guess besides Spaniards who colonized that they are the most

41
00:02:47.360 --> 00:02:50.800
Latino white people, right, I think so, I think So

42
00:02:51.400 --> 00:02:55.400
also when I think of Italians and Mexico, I think

43
00:02:55.439 --> 00:02:58.560
of my Italian singer who was basically canceled, ran out

44
00:02:58.599 --> 00:03:01.960
of Mexico because he said Mexican woman had mustaches and

45
00:03:02.719 --> 00:03:05.759
he wasn't wrong, but he was canceled. That was actually

46
00:03:05.800 --> 00:03:12.960
the first cancelation written and recorded, it documented in history. Yeah, yeah,

47
00:03:13.199 --> 00:03:16.000
so that's what I think of anyway. So yeah, my bad,

48
00:03:16.240 --> 00:03:21.560
my bad dick of Jersey Shore, which I'm sure Italians hate, right, Yeah,

49
00:03:21.639 --> 00:03:25.439
I'm so sorry Italians. So so yeah, let's get into

50
00:03:25.479 --> 00:03:27.280
this Italian American story.

51
00:03:29.159 --> 00:03:38.840
Wow, Spooky Tales first, it is and his Booky Tales first,

52
00:03:40.599 --> 00:03:40.960
and that.

53
00:03:41.080 --> 00:03:44.840
Was my bad. I can't get over it, Okay, I

54
00:03:44.879 --> 00:03:49.439
can't fucking dumb, all right, So yeah, not usually what

55
00:03:49.560 --> 00:03:56.080
we talk about. So okay. So, on the night of Wednesday,

56
00:03:56.159 --> 00:03:59.960
March third, nineteen twenty, several officers with the Richmond Police

57
00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:03.719
gathered outside of a home on San Paolo Avenue in

58
00:04:03.759 --> 00:04:09.280
else Rito, California, to investigate reports of strange activity. First,

59
00:04:09.319 --> 00:04:12.000
a little about else Rito. It's part of the Bay Area.

60
00:04:12.400 --> 00:04:14.639
It was founded by refugees from the nineteen oh six

61
00:04:14.680 --> 00:04:20.079
San Francisco earthquake, and it was incorporated in nineteen seventeen.

62
00:04:20.759 --> 00:04:23.600
Back then, when it was incorporated, only one five hundred

63
00:04:23.639 --> 00:04:26.839
people lived there. Now it's like twenty thousand or something.

64
00:04:27.879 --> 00:04:31.759
It was called rust Effirst, named after a German blacksmith

65
00:04:31.879 --> 00:04:36.040
named Mattias Roost, but nobody liked the name. And that's

66
00:04:36.120 --> 00:04:39.639
not a good name. It's fucking ugly. Yeah, and the

67
00:04:39.680 --> 00:04:42.519
Spanish population that was already in the area referred to

68
00:04:42.839 --> 00:04:46.639
this location as the Hill or else Rito already and

69
00:04:46.680 --> 00:04:49.199
that's what stuck, because honestly, it is better. It's better

70
00:04:49.360 --> 00:04:53.160
it does. When it was incorporated included what is Rust

71
00:04:53.399 --> 00:04:56.000
and then like three or four other like small areas

72
00:04:56.040 --> 00:04:58.120
that were all separate, but then they became one to

73
00:04:58.199 --> 00:05:01.759
become elter Rito. Back then, there was no police department,

74
00:05:01.920 --> 00:05:04.920
there was only one school, there was two churches, and

75
00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:08.439
most people still had like cattle instead of cars in

76
00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:11.959
nineteen twenty so. And it was also over twenty five

77
00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:19.560
percent Italian when this took place. And this this neighborhood

78
00:05:19.560 --> 00:05:23.680
happened to be the Italian part of Encrito. Oh interesting,

79
00:05:24.399 --> 00:05:29.319
so yeah, little Italyans in etc Rito. Yeah, not Mexican.

80
00:05:32.240 --> 00:05:34.800
And while all this was taking place, the prejudice that

81
00:05:34.959 --> 00:05:37.680
Italians face in the US was sort of still happening.

82
00:05:37.800 --> 00:05:39.839
It was not happening in the Bay Area at all.

83
00:05:41.759 --> 00:05:43.959
Are you saying? Elcerito was kind of like a refuge

84
00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:48.439
because they were not like discriminated against in Enserrito. They

85
00:05:48.439 --> 00:05:50.680
were just not discriminated against in this whole in the

86
00:05:50.680 --> 00:05:52.879
Bay Area in general. They were like the people on top.

87
00:05:52.959 --> 00:05:55.480
They were the founders of like areas. You know what

88
00:05:55.519 --> 00:06:00.319
I mean, That's what I meant to say. Yeah, also

89
00:06:00.439 --> 00:06:04.040
important to know, but this is nineteen twenty and spiritualism

90
00:06:04.240 --> 00:06:07.480
was like an all time high. It's popping off. Yes,

91
00:06:07.639 --> 00:06:11.279
it was the thing to be doing. Wigi bords love them,

92
00:06:11.319 --> 00:06:15.680
people love them? Yeah, they had them, Okay, And so

93
00:06:15.879 --> 00:06:20.519
now Uigimania again. Where before I started talking about the town,

94
00:06:20.639 --> 00:06:22.839
I left off where police were at the door of

95
00:06:22.879 --> 00:06:27.240
this San Pabla home. So what led police? Richmond police

96
00:06:27.600 --> 00:06:30.839
didn't have police, of course, So what led Richmond police

97
00:06:30.959 --> 00:06:35.160
to this Anda home? I started with a family tragedy

98
00:06:35.480 --> 00:06:38.920
and then another family tragedy in the same family. Very sad.

99
00:06:39.319 --> 00:06:42.439
The Moto family had been in the area for alost

100
00:06:42.480 --> 00:06:49.439
twenty years. Nasato Moto, Sorry, I'm sorry, Nasa sounds like

101
00:06:49.439 --> 00:07:00.240
an hold antone name, except I can see what you thought. Nazorrow,

102
00:07:01.040 --> 00:07:07.079
Nat Suddle, Mama Mia. Yes, I'm sorry to sorry to

103
00:07:07.120 --> 00:07:13.319
hold Italians. I'm so sorry. Okay. So, Nataro Moto was

104
00:07:13.399 --> 00:07:16.879
considered a pioneer of Serrito. He had been there the

105
00:07:16.920 --> 00:07:18.839
longest part of his family and then you know, they

106
00:07:18.879 --> 00:07:20.959
all met, they had babies on that and then on

107
00:07:21.079 --> 00:07:24.240
April thirteenth, nineteen nineteen, he suddenly died of a heart attack.

108
00:07:24.839 --> 00:07:27.720
Very tragic, very sudden. No one was expecting it. That

109
00:07:27.839 --> 00:07:37.199
same year, the youngest daughter of the mortal familya Moro. Again, like,

110
00:07:37.240 --> 00:07:40.720
these are very Spanish names. So, and I can almost

111
00:07:40.800 --> 00:07:43.879
understand Italian. I'm pretty sure I can learn it. Yeah. Same,

112
00:07:44.040 --> 00:07:48.120
it sounds almost like Spanish. Yeah, it's very similar. Anyway,

113
00:07:48.199 --> 00:07:50.879
Okennia Moto was taking a Christmas present to a friend

114
00:07:51.040 --> 00:07:54.600
when a car hit her and fled the scene. And

115
00:07:54.639 --> 00:07:58.199
there's reports of this accident where people say that she

116
00:07:58.319 --> 00:08:02.079
drags herself fifty feet before collapsing in a ditch and

117
00:08:02.120 --> 00:08:07.399
then dying from her injury. Oh wow, that's terrible. Yeah.

118
00:08:07.439 --> 00:08:09.759
And three people were on the street when she was

119
00:08:09.839 --> 00:08:12.040
hit and they ran over to help her, and they

120
00:08:12.040 --> 00:08:14.680
saw that the car was slowing down after a hitter,

121
00:08:15.160 --> 00:08:17.279
so they thought it was going to stop. They were

122
00:08:17.319 --> 00:08:20.000
more concerned with helping e Kenya, and no one wrote

123
00:08:20.040 --> 00:08:23.920
down a license plate or anything. Oh and the car left. Yeah,

124
00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:25.680
the car just left. They didn't even get a good

125
00:08:25.680 --> 00:08:30.800
look at it. Damn. And this obviously shook the remaining family,

126
00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:35.679
particularly Maria, the matriarch of the family, and the police

127
00:08:35.679 --> 00:08:38.480
had no idea how to find her daughter's killers, so

128
00:08:38.519 --> 00:08:42.080
she took matters into her own hand. She consulted the

129
00:08:42.080 --> 00:08:46.440
Ouiji board and it was actually Okenya Swuigi board. She

130
00:08:46.519 --> 00:08:48.600
had gotten it to try and communicate with her dad,

131
00:08:48.679 --> 00:08:52.559
who again died just like six months before her. Way,

132
00:08:52.639 --> 00:08:57.480
how all those o Kenya, I can't find so Josie,

133
00:08:57.799 --> 00:09:02.720
the older daughter was thirty nine or thirty so, and

134
00:09:02.799 --> 00:09:06.639
Aquenya was still in high school high school age, but

135
00:09:06.720 --> 00:09:10.120
I can't find her exact age fourteen or fifteen. I

136
00:09:10.120 --> 00:09:16.200
want to say, gotcha, And so Maria, Josie the twenty

137
00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:19.679
nine year old daughter, and Sussie Bottini, that's right exactly

138
00:09:19.720 --> 00:09:22.679
that when I saw it, they were like wait, I

139
00:09:22.679 --> 00:09:31.600
was like yeah. Anyway, they began to do seances together

140
00:09:31.799 --> 00:09:34.159
to try and figure out the license plate of the

141
00:09:34.200 --> 00:09:37.799
car who hit Auenya, and so they would sit there

142
00:09:37.840 --> 00:09:41.159
and ask like what is the license plate number? And

143
00:09:41.200 --> 00:09:44.519
they got a number. They took that number to the police,

144
00:09:44.600 --> 00:09:46.799
but the police was like, this isn't even a license

145
00:09:46.799 --> 00:09:50.279
plate number format, Like what is this number? Like yeah,

146
00:09:50.360 --> 00:09:52.679
like it just didn't make any sense. But it also

147
00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:55.120
just the police was like, okay, fine, well, like check

148
00:09:55.799 --> 00:09:58.000
our system. I don't know what the system was, like

149
00:09:58.120 --> 00:10:00.679
a piece of paper, I really don't have, like file

150
00:10:00.720 --> 00:10:02.759
cabinet with like lights of the places ran down or

151
00:10:02.799 --> 00:10:06.159
something something. But it didn't match anything they had in

152
00:10:06.200 --> 00:10:12.879
their system. So the women they continued their seances more

153
00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:15.159
and more to try and figure out because again they're

154
00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:17.240
like they're just they're trying to figure it out. The

155
00:10:17.240 --> 00:10:22.559
police isn't helping. They're obviously heartbroken. So yeah, they're doing

156
00:10:22.600 --> 00:10:25.080
like nonsob sciences at this point. And this is when

157
00:10:25.120 --> 00:10:28.200
things escalate where they're like this is what they're this

158
00:10:28.279 --> 00:10:32.159
is consumed them. And then they worried that they had

159
00:10:32.240 --> 00:10:38.039
unleashed evil spirits while doing these seances. Can't be good, no,

160
00:10:38.600 --> 00:10:42.919
because then these evil spirits began to make demands and

161
00:10:42.960 --> 00:10:44.840
this is like a over the course of two months

162
00:10:44.840 --> 00:10:47.679
that oh okay, yeah, they started getting worse and then

163
00:10:47.720 --> 00:10:51.000
the spirits were making demands. So the spirits told them

164
00:10:51.039 --> 00:10:56.039
to start bringing in children during the seances. Why oh,

165
00:10:56.080 --> 00:11:01.240
because they would make the connection stronger. Oh yeah, okay, yeah,

166
00:11:01.279 --> 00:11:04.799
I'm like, what are they going to do that possess them? No, no,

167
00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:09.120
just it would make the connection stronger. Makes sense, right,

168
00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:14.159
Then the spirits started making worse and worse demands. The

169
00:11:14.200 --> 00:11:17.360
spirits sold them to cut off the hair, to cut

170
00:11:17.360 --> 00:11:19.879
off the hair of the children and then burn the hair.

171
00:11:20.480 --> 00:11:23.960
Then they demanded that money be burned, and then they

172
00:11:23.960 --> 00:11:25.879
started with a few dollars, but by the end they

173
00:11:25.960 --> 00:11:30.639
had burned seven hundred dollars. That's quite a bit. Yeah

174
00:11:30.679 --> 00:11:36.559
today that would have been thirteen seventy one dollars. Well. Yeah.

175
00:11:37.360 --> 00:11:40.960
They also were breaking furniture and burning that furniture. They

176
00:11:40.960 --> 00:11:44.919
were doing twenty four hour seances, and during these twenty

177
00:11:44.960 --> 00:11:47.639
four hour seiances, no one was allowed to leave, eat

178
00:11:47.759 --> 00:11:53.799
or sleep. Damn, that sounds horrible. Yes. Then suddenly a

179
00:11:53.840 --> 00:11:56.679
mysterious hole the size of a grave appeared in the yard,

180
00:11:57.240 --> 00:12:00.720
and Maddie, I believe that that's where the spirits were

181
00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:05.279
coming out from and now neighbors are like, what is

182
00:12:05.320 --> 00:12:09.240
happening at the Model House? Like, something serious is happening.

183
00:12:09.559 --> 00:12:13.559
They saw kids arriving but never leave. The windows were

184
00:12:13.600 --> 00:12:18.039
all shut, they never came out. There was a holding

185
00:12:18.320 --> 00:12:22.360
is going on here. Yeah, something is happening, especially in

186
00:12:22.399 --> 00:12:25.440
the last week. They were like, wow, things are escalating,

187
00:12:26.080 --> 00:12:32.320
We're worried and yeah. So this led neighbors to wonder

188
00:12:32.440 --> 00:12:36.240
if people were being held against their will inside the

189
00:12:36.279 --> 00:12:40.519
Model House or if there was dark magic being practiced.

190
00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:45.279
I mean either one could be it. Yeah. They tried knocking,

191
00:12:45.360 --> 00:12:49.960
but Mariamro never opened the door, and so then the

192
00:12:49.960 --> 00:12:52.879
neighbors went to the local marshall, who then went to

193
00:12:52.960 --> 00:12:55.559
the Richmond well. First the local marshall went and knocked,

194
00:12:55.919 --> 00:12:58.639
but Madia didn't open the door. So then he went

195
00:12:58.720 --> 00:13:03.000
to the Richmond Police and he the Richmond Police Chief

196
00:13:03.080 --> 00:13:06.039
and six officers and a Catholic priest went down to

197
00:13:06.080 --> 00:13:10.159
the Motor house and they tried knocking. They weren't like,

198
00:13:10.200 --> 00:13:14.159
nobody answered, so then they broke down the door and

199
00:13:14.279 --> 00:13:17.919
when they were finally able to enter, police found twelve

200
00:13:17.960 --> 00:13:23.120
people inside, seven adults and five children, and the seven

201
00:13:23.200 --> 00:13:27.080
adults were all arrested the I don't know if they

202
00:13:27.080 --> 00:13:29.759
were teenagers or like young adults, but they were taken

203
00:13:29.759 --> 00:13:32.080
into custody too, and then the kids were all placed

204
00:13:32.120 --> 00:13:39.600
in different homes. The news of this arrests were sensational nationwide.

205
00:13:39.679 --> 00:13:43.720
The next day, like wildly reported, and there was a

206
00:13:44.039 --> 00:13:48.639
mass meeting in the city of Enserrito of town whatever,

207
00:13:49.919 --> 00:13:56.519
the State Commission in Lunacy. That was the Department of Health.

208
00:13:56.879 --> 00:13:58.919
Oh okay, that was their name, the State Commission in

209
00:13:58.919 --> 00:14:04.240
the Lunancy. They announced that every single resident would be

210
00:14:04.399 --> 00:14:11.120
psychiatrically evaluated because of this. Yeah, they feared that this

211
00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:16.039
was going to spread, I guess, and this hysteria over

212
00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:20.679
the wigi board. But yeah, I don't see how I

213
00:14:20.679 --> 00:14:24.559
feel like upon hearing that, that would make people want

214
00:14:24.600 --> 00:14:28.480
to see what all of us is about and go

215
00:14:28.559 --> 00:14:31.679
get a wigi board. I mean, if I didn't have

216
00:14:31.720 --> 00:14:34.039
one before, I probably would have went to go get one.

217
00:14:34.440 --> 00:14:38.120
I'd be like, I might I might need to try this, Yeah, yeah,

218
00:14:38.559 --> 00:14:40.600
just to see, just to see, Yeah, just to say,

219
00:14:41.799 --> 00:14:44.399
and that's how they get you. That's she's mosas. That's

220
00:14:44.399 --> 00:14:48.120
how they get us or the ghosts. Yeah, that was they.

221
00:14:48.159 --> 00:14:50.799
That's what I'm talking about they are the ghosts. Yeah,

222
00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:53.879
that's how the ghosts get You said that she is Mosas.

223
00:14:54.799 --> 00:14:58.120
That's how the ghost get that she's Mosas. Oh okay, wow,

224
00:14:58.759 --> 00:15:01.919
I'm my brain because I'm so tired right now. I

225
00:15:01.960 --> 00:15:07.440
think so, I don't think it's me. Yeah, anyway, So yeah,

226
00:15:07.559 --> 00:15:10.879
the Commission in Lunacy feared that this was going to

227
00:15:10.919 --> 00:15:13.519
be a widespread issue and not just the initial twelve

228
00:15:13.600 --> 00:15:16.120
that was in the house. That were in the house,

229
00:15:16.480 --> 00:15:19.600
and those initial twelve, it was fifty five year old

230
00:15:19.679 --> 00:15:23.960
Maria Moro, her twenty nine year old daughter, Josie Soldavani

231
00:15:24.200 --> 00:15:30.159
Toldavini Soldavini Solavigni, I We're so sorry, Oh my god,

232
00:15:30.759 --> 00:15:34.039
her thirty year old son in law, Charles, and then

233
00:15:34.120 --> 00:15:37.399
her grandchildren, four year old Marino and two year old Eleanor.

234
00:15:37.919 --> 00:15:43.759
And then there was fifteen year old Adeline Bottini Bini.

235
00:15:43.919 --> 00:15:45.480
This is when I was like, oh shit, they're not

236
00:15:45.600 --> 00:15:52.799
Mexican like Adeleine Bottini. Yeah, her younger sister, Rosie Bottini,

237
00:15:53.279 --> 00:15:55.759
and then her parents, Susie and John, and then there

238
00:15:55.879 --> 00:16:04.519
was two cousins there, Louis and Harry Ferradio. So it's

239
00:16:04.519 --> 00:16:12.080
like guy Fieria Ferrari. Yeah yeah, and then they're oh, sorry,

240
00:16:12.080 --> 00:16:14.759
two more people. I think they these were neighbors, but

241
00:16:14.799 --> 00:16:19.600
thirty five year olds Ida Benno and her daughter Tessi Bene.

242
00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:24.639
So I could have been Mexican, you know, I'm sorry.

243
00:16:24.679 --> 00:16:26.799
I never met a Mexican named Tessi. But okay, go

244
00:16:26.879 --> 00:16:38.360
on anyway. Okay, So when police descended upon these twelve, Maria, Josie, Idolen,

245
00:16:38.519 --> 00:16:41.720
and Susie were super upset. But not because the police

246
00:16:41.759 --> 00:16:47.360
came knocking their door down. No, because they interrupted the seance. Okay,

247
00:16:47.759 --> 00:16:49.279
I had to find the urge to cut you off

248
00:16:49.320 --> 00:16:52.279
and say what you just said? I knew I could tell,

249
00:16:52.360 --> 00:16:55.279
I could see yeah, like that guy that mean with

250
00:16:55.320 --> 00:17:02.080
the vein. Yeah, that was it. Yeah. Yeah. And the

251
00:17:02.120 --> 00:17:05.200
police noticed right away that the women appeared pale and

252
00:17:05.240 --> 00:17:09.119
malmourished and were completely obsessed with the spirit world. They

253
00:17:09.119 --> 00:17:14.000
would not shut up about the spirit world. Oh wow. Yeah,

254
00:17:14.519 --> 00:17:17.559
and so they were quickly considered insane and sent to

255
00:17:17.680 --> 00:17:25.519
separate asylums for evaluation. The men were all released. To

256
00:17:25.519 --> 00:17:37.039
be fair though, crickets uh interesting, uh yeah, yeah, the

257
00:17:37.559 --> 00:17:40.160
men were not the ones in the same state of mind,

258
00:17:40.680 --> 00:17:44.640
right right, right, yeah, yeah, and so while speaking with

259
00:17:44.839 --> 00:17:49.319
experts at the three separate facilities, all of the four

260
00:17:49.359 --> 00:17:51.799
women told doctors that they were convinced that they had

261
00:17:51.839 --> 00:17:54.359
opened a door to the other side and were releasing

262
00:17:54.400 --> 00:17:58.400
evil spirits. Maria I explained to doctors that the family

263
00:17:58.480 --> 00:18:00.839
had started using the Wiji board to help capture her

264
00:18:00.880 --> 00:18:04.559
daughter's killers because they weren't doing their jobs. So officers

265
00:18:04.599 --> 00:18:10.920
weren't doing their daughters clearly, obviously, and so the women

266
00:18:11.000 --> 00:18:14.880
all said, you know, separately to these experts doctors that

267
00:18:14.920 --> 00:18:18.799
the spirits came through during their sessions had given them

268
00:18:18.839 --> 00:18:22.000
license plate numbers that belonged to the men that had

269
00:18:22.079 --> 00:18:27.519
killed Okenya. And then they also said, then the tables

270
00:18:27.559 --> 00:18:31.400
turned because the spirits began to make these strange requests,

271
00:18:31.440 --> 00:18:33.880
and those are the requests that I mentioned earlier, like

272
00:18:34.079 --> 00:18:37.640
the children being brought in, their hair being cut and burned,

273
00:18:37.720 --> 00:18:43.000
all those things. Adeline told the doctors, we cut my sisters,

274
00:18:43.000 --> 00:18:46.680
and Adeline is the younger neighbor. We cut my sister

275
00:18:46.799 --> 00:18:49.839
Rosie's hair because we were told she would die otherwise.

276
00:18:51.119 --> 00:18:54.440
That's what the spirits were saying. Josie told them my

277
00:18:54.559 --> 00:18:58.400
sister Jenny, that's what they called Okenya had used the

278
00:18:58.359 --> 00:19:01.759
Ouiji board in talking with my father, and I was

279
00:19:01.759 --> 00:19:07.680
talking with her, we heard strange sounds and voices, and Adeline,

280
00:19:07.759 --> 00:19:10.079
maybe because she was younger, she seemed to be the

281
00:19:10.079 --> 00:19:13.119
one to be able to communicate with the spirits the most.

282
00:19:13.440 --> 00:19:15.759
And she had also said, quote, I have been in

283
00:19:15.799 --> 00:19:18.039
a trance for some time, and I know what the

284
00:19:18.079 --> 00:19:22.200
Wiji board tells me is true. And a quote nice

285
00:19:23.480 --> 00:19:28.400
and yeah. The story became or it blew up overnight.

286
00:19:28.799 --> 00:19:33.039
It made headlines and newspapers across the country. In Nebraska alone,

287
00:19:33.079 --> 00:19:36.119
there was like seventy one articles about the story, damn

288
00:19:36.960 --> 00:19:40.559
all the way in about Nebraska, and there was headlines

289
00:19:40.599 --> 00:19:45.440
from the Chicago Daily, the Tuscaloosa News, the Omaha Evening

290
00:19:45.559 --> 00:19:49.000
b and also this headline from the Oakland Tribune, which

291
00:19:49.039 --> 00:19:51.000
I know Oakland is like right in this area, so

292
00:19:51.079 --> 00:19:55.000
it's not nationwide, but the headline from the Oakland Tribune

293
00:19:55.119 --> 00:20:00.759
read el serrito wuigi zeliz keep woman prisoner in history house.

294
00:20:01.799 --> 00:20:05.000
Doesn't sound good. No, it's not looking good for these

295
00:20:05.359 --> 00:20:11.400
nope women here, these zealots. As the story gained traction,

296
00:20:11.839 --> 00:20:15.200
local government officials panicked about how much this craze was

297
00:20:15.240 --> 00:20:19.119
going to spread, and that's when they were like, everyone

298
00:20:19.160 --> 00:20:24.400
needs to get evaluated. There was calls from state senators

299
00:20:24.440 --> 00:20:27.319
to quote step in and prohibit the sale of wigi

300
00:20:27.359 --> 00:20:33.400
boards altogether. Damn Yeah. The same senator also said that

301
00:20:33.680 --> 00:20:36.759
using wigi bards was as bad as a drug habit. Oh,

302
00:20:36.960 --> 00:20:42.640
come on now. One reverend all the way in New

303
00:20:42.759 --> 00:20:47.279
York said that churchless town of Esserito is almost forgotten,

304
00:20:47.480 --> 00:20:54.839
well nigh forsaken by the organized Christian churches. Forsaken. Wow.

305
00:20:56.079 --> 00:20:59.559
After a few interviews, the State Commission in Lunacy aka

306
00:20:59.599 --> 00:21:02.839
the of Health concluded that there, I'm just I love

307
00:21:02.880 --> 00:21:05.400
that name, the State Commission in Lunacy. I can't get

308
00:21:05.400 --> 00:21:09.519
over it anyway. And they concluded that there was no

309
00:21:09.559 --> 00:21:12.400
need to evaluate everyone in the town because because the

310
00:21:12.480 --> 00:21:15.680
mania had been contained to only those twelve. Okay, I

311
00:21:15.720 --> 00:21:20.599
mean that's reasonable, it makes sense. The women were released

312
00:21:20.640 --> 00:21:25.680
from the asylum after three weeks of treatment. Doctors felt

313
00:21:25.720 --> 00:21:28.519
that they just needed to rest and be away from

314
00:21:28.559 --> 00:21:33.519
each other. That was the Cure's a good solution. I mean, yeah,

315
00:21:33.920 --> 00:21:37.400
they're probably egging each other on shit. Yeah, It's like

316
00:21:37.880 --> 00:21:39.880
when you're with your cousins and you're like oh my god,

317
00:21:39.920 --> 00:21:42.640
did you hear that? They're like, no, no, I heard it.

318
00:21:42.720 --> 00:21:45.559
I felt Did you feel that? Yeah, so yeah they

319
00:21:45.559 --> 00:21:49.720
were probably so. Yeah, they just needed to rest and

320
00:21:49.799 --> 00:21:52.680
to be away from each other. And yeah, after leaving

321
00:21:52.680 --> 00:21:56.119
the asylum, the youngest adeline, she graduated high school, she

322
00:21:56.160 --> 00:21:59.480
moved out of El Serrito. She eventually got married. Everyone

323
00:21:59.480 --> 00:22:03.880
else stated the area, and yeah, lived out their lives

324
00:22:03.920 --> 00:22:06.640
like normal, And this little Wigi board craze was just

325
00:22:06.680 --> 00:22:10.799
a blur, blurer in the past, as they say. And yeah,

326
00:22:10.880 --> 00:22:15.079
that was the time Sero went Wiji board crazy, apparently

327
00:22:15.200 --> 00:22:23.759
not involving Mexicans but Italian Americans. Yes, yes, yeah, what

328
00:22:23.839 --> 00:22:28.119
a fascinating story. Yeah I thought so, I thought so. So,

329
00:22:28.240 --> 00:22:31.680
you know, what fun wind to cover. Anyway, like, at

330
00:22:31.720 --> 00:22:35.359
the end of the day, no harm was done. Everyone survived,

331
00:22:35.559 --> 00:22:38.359
other than a short stint at the lunacy whatever the

332
00:22:38.400 --> 00:22:43.680
hell it was called. Yeah, the asylum, Yeah, signed by

333
00:22:43.759 --> 00:22:52.640
the Commission in lunacy. Yeah yeah so so yeah, shorter episode.

334
00:22:52.720 --> 00:22:57.680
But again, I was busy today. It was an eventful

335
00:22:57.839 --> 00:23:01.039
day today at the time of recording Setember twenty twenty five,

336
00:23:01.119 --> 00:23:04.880
I was a little busy. Yeah, yep. Anyway, let's take

337
00:23:04.880 --> 00:23:11.160
a little break here and then we'll do spooky recommendations

338
00:23:12.920 --> 00:23:18.000
and we're back. Do you have spooky recommendations? I do.

339
00:23:18.440 --> 00:23:24.160
I actually just finished reading Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn,

340
00:23:24.599 --> 00:23:27.839
who famously wrote Gone Girl, but this was actually her

341
00:23:27.880 --> 00:23:32.839
debut novel. Oh I don't know that. And I also

342
00:23:32.960 --> 00:23:36.480
recently finished watching Dawn. What's it called the one I

343
00:23:36.519 --> 00:23:40.960
was telling you about the documentary Unknown Numbers? Oh? Yeah, yeah,

344
00:23:41.000 --> 00:23:42.920
we're going to talk about it on Patreon. Yeah, so

345
00:23:42.960 --> 00:23:45.279
I'm not going to watch it. People will know I've

346
00:23:45.279 --> 00:23:47.680
talked about a non number or something like that on Netflix.

347
00:23:48.720 --> 00:23:52.680
And if you watch that and want to read a

348
00:23:52.720 --> 00:23:56.599
fiction something that sort of reminds you has the same

349
00:23:57.440 --> 00:24:05.519
small town weirdness of that documentary as well as toxic

350
00:24:07.000 --> 00:24:09.599
motherness vibes. I don't know what I'm saying. I keep

351
00:24:09.599 --> 00:24:12.759
adding this towards that are it's necessary here for it,

352
00:24:12.839 --> 00:24:17.319
but it but very much after as I was reading it,

353
00:24:17.359 --> 00:24:19.480
I was like, this has the vibes of that documentary,

354
00:24:19.519 --> 00:24:25.160
but worse because there is some child deaths in Sharp Objects. Oh,

355
00:24:25.200 --> 00:24:28.200
sharp Objects? Yeah, yeah, sorry, because I was kind of

356
00:24:28.200 --> 00:24:29.799
like talking about the two and I was saying, how

357
00:24:29.920 --> 00:24:34.680
sharp Objects reminded me of that documentary because the same

358
00:24:35.240 --> 00:24:39.680
small town toxic Say. Yes, okay, I somehow thought you

359
00:24:39.720 --> 00:24:41.839
were going to bring up a different book. No, no,

360
00:24:41.880 --> 00:24:45.319
I'm talking about My recommendation is Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn,

361
00:24:45.599 --> 00:24:47.599
and now saying that if you watch our documentary and

362
00:24:47.640 --> 00:24:51.839
are wanting to read like a fictional sort of version

363
00:24:51.920 --> 00:24:58.160
of that, but worse, way worse than Sharp Objects would

364
00:24:58.240 --> 00:25:01.640
be a good read. Let me read the synopsis real quick,

365
00:25:02.599 --> 00:25:06.000
okay that description. Fresh from a brief stay at a

366
00:25:06.039 --> 00:25:10.240
psych hospital, reporter Camille Preeker faces a troubling assignment. She

367
00:25:10.319 --> 00:25:12.960
must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders

368
00:25:12.960 --> 00:25:16.319
of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken

369
00:25:16.359 --> 00:25:19.799
to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half sister

370
00:25:19.880 --> 00:25:22.359
she barely knows. A beautiful thirteen year old with an

371
00:25:22.440 --> 00:25:25.359
eerie grip on the town. Now installed in her old

372
00:25:25.400 --> 00:25:29.640
bedroom and her family's victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying

373
00:25:29.640 --> 00:25:32.640
with the young victims a bit too strongly. Dogged by

374
00:25:32.640 --> 00:25:36.119
her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of

375
00:25:36.119 --> 00:25:38.599
her own past if she wants to get the story

376
00:25:38.640 --> 00:25:43.319
and survive this homecoming. So it was a good reading,

377
00:25:43.480 --> 00:25:46.000
full of one twist I predicted the other twist. I

378
00:25:46.079 --> 00:25:48.039
was like, what the I didn't see that coming, although

379
00:25:48.079 --> 00:25:50.799
I think in hindsight I should have. But it'd be

380
00:25:50.880 --> 00:25:55.279
like that sometimes. Yeah, it was a dark read. But

381
00:25:55.559 --> 00:26:00.680
you know that's my kind of read, and you're yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

382
00:26:00.880 --> 00:26:04.720
it was a good read, good thriller. Okay, okay, I

383
00:26:04.960 --> 00:26:07.480
might read it. It's a short read. It's only two

384
00:26:07.559 --> 00:26:11.839
hundred and fifty four pages. Oh that is short. I

385
00:26:12.039 --> 00:26:14.960
finally read Oh my god, what was it that v

386
00:26:15.079 --> 00:26:19.039
Castro book? Oh, goddess a filth? Yes, I finally read

387
00:26:19.119 --> 00:26:20.400
Got Us a Filth? Very fun?

388
00:26:20.599 --> 00:26:20.799
Was it?

389
00:26:20.880 --> 00:26:23.480
Not the best thing? Ever? It was fun. I love that.

390
00:26:23.960 --> 00:26:26.440
I could not believe the end or not the end,

391
00:26:26.480 --> 00:26:29.839
but I couldn't believe the Actually I could, but I

392
00:26:29.839 --> 00:26:34.799
couldn't believe the priest in that book. Yeah yeah, if

393
00:26:34.799 --> 00:26:37.920
you know, you know, But yeah, no, it was a

394
00:26:38.039 --> 00:26:40.720
very fun read. I'm very glad. It was very much

395
00:26:40.920 --> 00:26:44.279
how you described sheikan asked, meet the craft. Yeah that

396
00:26:44.559 --> 00:26:50.039
was literally it. It Wait was fun. I laughed, I cried,

397
00:26:50.720 --> 00:26:58.799
I was mad. Yeah, it's good. Why I wait? Sorry,

398
00:26:58.920 --> 00:27:02.960
really quick commendation. If you have watched that documentary Unknown

399
00:27:03.279 --> 00:27:06.400
whatever the hell it's called, on Netflix, then you should

400
00:27:06.440 --> 00:27:11.640
watch the YouTube video by Olay and Kenny j. D.

401
00:27:11.880 --> 00:27:14.839
There's a video of them together about the documentary. And

402
00:27:14.960 --> 00:27:16.640
I don't even think I finished watching it. It's just

403
00:27:16.640 --> 00:27:19.119
a funny shit. Ever though, like I started watching it

404
00:27:19.119 --> 00:27:21.319
and I was like, I need's watch documentary. Yeah, it

405
00:27:21.319 --> 00:27:23.119
don't make so much more sense because they don't really

406
00:27:23.200 --> 00:27:25.799
they don't describe, they don't do a recap. They just

407
00:27:25.839 --> 00:27:31.400
talk about it. But it was off the hook and

408
00:27:31.440 --> 00:27:33.759
we'll talk about it when we do when you after

409
00:27:33.839 --> 00:27:38.000
you watch it for the Batrios. But that video was hilarious.

410
00:27:39.440 --> 00:27:43.720
It's a rightful commentary as well. Okay, okay, yeah, I

411
00:27:43.759 --> 00:27:46.960
need to won't watch it, and it reminded me. Sorry,

412
00:27:46.960 --> 00:27:48.960
it reminded me because when you were like why iata

413
00:27:49.000 --> 00:27:52.000
and you made like a punching fist because throughout the video, Olay,

414
00:27:52.039 --> 00:27:53.720
it's like I would have just I would have punched

415
00:27:53.759 --> 00:27:58.039
her about the mom That's funny. She's like why did

416
00:27:58.160 --> 00:28:02.759
nobody beat her? Ass? I mean, some people just that's

417
00:28:02.759 --> 00:28:06.240
what they mean. I'm not don't know. I mean, I'm

418
00:28:06.279 --> 00:28:09.920
not calling for it. I'm just saying no, some people

419
00:28:10.279 --> 00:28:13.240
kind of you know, it would do them some good.

420
00:28:14.440 --> 00:28:20.400
Some people some people, yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, my speaking recommendations,

421
00:28:20.559 --> 00:28:24.440
I oh, yeah, well I read Goddess of Filth and yeah,

422
00:28:24.440 --> 00:28:28.640
it was fantastic. I butch is a brook book. I

423
00:28:28.720 --> 00:28:32.240
need to send out the discussion questions. I'm I don't

424
00:28:32.240 --> 00:28:34.400
know why. I just don't want to even because I

425
00:28:34.559 --> 00:28:39.000
already finished the Bewitching. I'm halfway through the Bewitching and

426
00:28:39.079 --> 00:28:42.079
aching to talk about Okay, okay, I'm going to send

427
00:28:42.079 --> 00:28:45.279
out the discussion question I'm going to get people like

428
00:28:45.319 --> 00:28:49.200
two days just to say that I gave you some

429
00:28:49.279 --> 00:28:51.839
days to say anything about it, and then we'll record

430
00:28:51.960 --> 00:28:53.920
our episode on but You so we can move on

431
00:28:54.240 --> 00:28:57.839
to the Bewitching. Because the Bewitching has been it was

432
00:28:58.240 --> 00:29:03.839
the perfect fall spooky book. Yeah again, I'm like three

433
00:29:03.880 --> 00:29:06.839
fourths of the way through and yeah, it's been a

434
00:29:06.880 --> 00:29:10.400
great read so far. So but no my spooky recommendations,

435
00:29:10.480 --> 00:29:13.680
which I haven't read but I'm excited to. So. First

436
00:29:13.680 --> 00:29:17.880
one Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones. I've heard that's about

437
00:29:17.880 --> 00:29:19.759
it at that bookstore that I was telling you about.

438
00:29:20.920 --> 00:29:24.000
And uh, it's about werewolves. That's all I know about it.

439
00:29:24.039 --> 00:29:26.680
I don't know anything else. But so far, I've liked

440
00:29:27.240 --> 00:29:31.759
two of his other books I've liked. Obviously, I loved

441
00:29:31.799 --> 00:29:35.039
Deep Beflow, Hunter, Hunter, and then I forgot the other

442
00:29:35.039 --> 00:29:37.680
book that I liked. I really can't you remember read

443
00:29:37.720 --> 00:29:42.920
The Only Good Indians? Oh no, No, it was the

444
00:29:43.000 --> 00:29:46.240
other one that some people like, don't care for it,

445
00:29:46.279 --> 00:29:49.880
and I thought it was Okay, my Heart, yes, I

446
00:29:50.640 --> 00:29:53.440
I haven't one. White people didn't like My Heart is

447
00:29:53.480 --> 00:29:58.440
a Chainsaw, but I did like parts of it. I

448
00:29:57.880 --> 00:30:01.000
was also read with The Only Good Indians. Okay, that's

449
00:30:01.000 --> 00:30:03.880
the one I always need for me. I've heard amazing

450
00:30:03.880 --> 00:30:05.960
things about it too. But this is one of his

451
00:30:06.000 --> 00:30:09.720
earlier books, if not his debut. I don't remember. But

452
00:30:10.519 --> 00:30:13.519
someone said werewolves and I was like, I'm there, I'm there,

453
00:30:13.599 --> 00:30:15.720
and so yeah, that one and then the other one

454
00:30:15.920 --> 00:30:18.599
I've been meaning to read for the longest time, The

455
00:30:18.720 --> 00:30:23.440
Change Aline. Oh I that is also my TBR tag

456
00:30:23.480 --> 00:30:27.359
do on lippy Yes, So yeah, that's the other one

457
00:30:27.359 --> 00:30:29.519
that I've been wanting to read. Wait you did. You

458
00:30:29.519 --> 00:30:31.160
didn't even say it was called You just showed it.

459
00:30:31.400 --> 00:30:34.960
Not everyone is watching The Change Aline by Victor Leval

460
00:30:35.960 --> 00:30:38.000
and I read another book by Victor Lavelle and I

461
00:30:38.000 --> 00:30:39.440
can't remember the name of it, but it was The

462
00:30:39.519 --> 00:30:42.079
Devil Something, The Devil Book. I read one as well,

463
00:30:42.440 --> 00:30:46.119
Lone Women, which was amazing. Oh yeah, I love the

464
00:30:46.200 --> 00:30:49.640
Devil one. I really can't remember the name. I know

465
00:30:49.759 --> 00:30:51.599
Devil's there if you look up Devil. It was a

466
00:30:51.640 --> 00:30:53.960
past recommendation you made as well. It was. I did

467
00:30:54.000 --> 00:30:56.839
talk about it extensively after I finished. It was so good.

468
00:30:56.960 --> 00:30:59.599
Highly recommend day and so we'll see. We'll see when

469
00:30:59.599 --> 00:31:02.279
I get to the but I'm excited for both of them. Cool.

470
00:31:02.400 --> 00:31:04.200
I did also make a video about it, and now

471
00:31:04.200 --> 00:31:06.279
I'm talking about you, and I haven't watched it. No,

472
00:31:06.319 --> 00:31:08.960
I haven't posted it. Oh, so many videos I haven't posted.

473
00:31:09.200 --> 00:31:12.240
I finally feel alive today. Hey, you have a little log.

474
00:31:12.480 --> 00:31:14.599
Oh well they're not edited, but I do have a

475
00:31:14.640 --> 00:31:17.880
log of some okay, nice anyway, Sorry, were you gonna

476
00:31:17.880 --> 00:31:20.000
see something else? I was just gonna say. I guess

477
00:31:20.000 --> 00:31:23.039
that brings us to the end of the episode. Yes, yes,

478
00:31:23.079 --> 00:31:25.799
it does. Other than reminder that you can catch us

479
00:31:25.839 --> 00:31:29.200
live at the event. The KUKUOI is going to get you.

480
00:31:29.640 --> 00:31:34.400
November first, a Saturday, in a Yakama reminder to all

481
00:31:34.400 --> 00:31:40.000
the Yackamanians, the Yakamaites. Yes, I will extend that to

482
00:31:40.039 --> 00:31:43.240
everyone in Washington. Make that drive. Yeah, it's probably only

483
00:31:43.240 --> 00:31:47.880
a couple hours. It is seven pm at the Baptist

484
00:31:47.880 --> 00:31:53.400

494
00:32:25.440 --> 00:32:28.279
Marias that you're doing seances with because they might get

495
00:32:28.279 --> 00:32:34.000
a little upsessed. They will get obsessed, yes, Maria Moro,

496
00:32:34.400 --> 00:32:39.559
